Teen says suspicious man followed her to school

LAYTON -- Police want to locate a motorist who appeared to be following a Layton teen as she walked to school this morning.

Around 7:30 a.m., the girl, who police will only say is a student at Legacy Junior High, called 911 and reported a man in a light blue van followed her for several blocks at a slow speed.

The man started following her as she walked along 3200 West near 1100 North and continued until the girl approached the school near 411 North, said Sgt. Todd Derrick.

Police say the man never said anything to the girl and the two never had any physical contact, but officers want to find the man and ask about his intentions.

"Obviously we would like to follow up and find out who the driver was, where he was going and what he was doing in the area," Derrick said.

The only description the girl could provide police is that the man appeared to be a white male in his 20s and that he was driving a light blue mini-van. She could not provide officers with a license plate of the vehicle.

Officers scoured the area for about 30 minutes after receiving reports of the incident, but they did not find a van that matched the description, Derrick said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Layton Police and Fire Dispatch at (801) 497-8300.
