OGDEN — The Utah Department of Transportation is in the first stages of creating a west Davis highway.
Randy Jeffries, UDOT Region One project manager, told the Weber County Commission recently that UDOT plans to begin taking public input about the highway and will evaluate the various options to meet transportation demands.
In 2011, the agency hopes to begin an environmental impact statement to be approved by the beginning of 2013.
Jeffries said the land UDOT is studying for a highway is an area bordered by 12th Street on the north, Great Salt Lake on the west, Interstate 15 on the east and Centerville on the south.
The idea of a west Davis highway came up nearly 50 years ago, Jeffries said, but it was only in 2001 that a new approach began to materialize. In 2007, the idea was studied more seriously.
Jeffries said he is getting the process started by talking to city and county officials so UDOT can involve as many parties as possible who will potentially be affected by the transportation corridor.
He said UDOT is aiming for an open and objective process that considers all available options to determine whether an east-west or north-south route works best.
UDOT officials plan to work from collected information to devise a solution, rather than set a route and make everything else fit, he said.
“We are committed, No. 1, to keep you informed in this process,†he told commissioners.
Commissioner Jan Zogmaister said she thinks the highway coming into Weber County is a good idea, but does not see the point in it extending past 5600 South.
