SALT LAKE CITY -- A veteran political journalist has been appointed the chief of staff for the Utah House Republicans.

In a news release, incoming House Speaker Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, says Joe Pyrah will be the chief of staff for the majority caucus. He will start Jan. 3.

The 37-year-old Pyrah is currently a political reporter for The Daily Herald of Provo. He has worked for the newspaper for six years and was its only full-time legislative reporter during the annual, 45-day sessions.

The previous chief of staff, Chris Bleak, left the position after Lockhart defeated current Speaker David Clark, R-Santa Clara, in a November leadership election.
