Layton man dies after late-night crash

CENTERVILLE — A 56-year-old Layton man is dead following a single-car accident on Legacy Highway at 11:42 p.m. Friday.

Marcello Torres died a few hours after his 1997 Honda Civic crashed into a streetlight’s concrete base, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Johnson.

Torres was taken by ambulance to the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, where was pronounced dead.

Johnson said police believe Torres fell asleep at the wheel before the mishap occurred at Mile Marker 11 in the highway’s northbound lanes.

No other vehicles were involved, and no passengers were in the car.

Johnson said the road was dry and Torres was not impaired at the time of the crash.

Northbound highway lanes were closed for two and a half hours while troopers responded and cleaned up the debris, Johnson said.
