SALT LAKE CITY -- The American Red Cross in Utah is taking an unusual step to boost blood bank supplies.
It's offering to pay one month's rent or a mortgage payment -- up to $1,500 -- for one lucky donor who gives blood during January.
The Deseret News of Salt Lake City reports the National Volunteer Blood Donor month offer aims to draw attention to a constant need for blood and blood products.
Recruitment chief JaLae Thompson says donations usually drop in January, while the Red Cross faces a steady need to collect 440 units of blood per day.
Donors have to meet minimum age, weight and health requirements, and have to have a donor card or positive identification.
