ST. GEORGE -- Washington County officials say a recycling program launched in 2008 is quickly catching on with residents who turned in 2.6 million pounds of recycled material in 2010.
The figure is nearly 1 million pounds more than that was collected in 2009 when the program recycled 1.7 million pounds. The figures are from the Washington County Solid Waste District.
County recycling coordinator Jennifer Winward told The Spectrum of St. George that additional large recycling bins could be added throughout the county if the figures continue to increase.
Officials say the recycled material sold yielded $72,000 for projects such as trail improvements and local festivals.
