SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah House members passed a bill to fund a $1.7 million veterinary school partnership between Utah State University and Washington State University.
House Bill 57 passed on a 48-23 vote Friday.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
Bill sponsor Republican John Mathis of Vernal says the bill will allow students in Utah to attend school at the Logan university for two years and finish the final two years of their degree in Washington.
Opponents of the bill say it is too costly, despite the demand for animal doctors in Utah's farming industry. But Mathis says the proposed bill is less costly than having USU operate its own program, which would cost about $10 million.
