Bank robbery suspect hospitalized in critical condition

SOUTH OGDEN -- Michael Ames, 45, remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition with gunshot wounds he received following a string of events that began with a bank robbery and included a car chase and home invasion.

South Ogden police said Ames was shot by police Friday afternoon in the 3900 block of Raymond Avenue after a homeowner chased him out of a house he broke into and he pointed a gun at pursuing officers.

Police said Ames is the man who held up a Key Bank branch on Wall Avenue in Ogden, fled to Davis County and then back to Weber, hijacked a car and finally ran through backyards of a South Ogden neighborhood where he broke into the home.

South Ogden police spokeswoman Marci Edwards said Saturday the investigation is continuing and she didn't know how many shots were fired or what officers fired them.

Edwards said Ames has a criminal history involving drug abuse. She said formal charges have not yet been filed.
