Phragmites burn cause of smoke

Apr 2 2011 - 10:21pm

FARMINGTON -- Large plumes of smoke seen Saturday afternoon over the southern end of Davis County came from a controlled burn of phragmites near the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area.

South Davis Fire Chief Jim Rampton said a Davis County duck club burned the invasive plant that spreads rapidly and makes marshland areas inhospitable to water birds.

"It's a pretty impressive sight," Rampton said of the smoke that could be seen over a wide area. "But everything is under control."
