No hazardous material at IRS building in Farr West

Apr 30 2011 - 6:01pm

A hazardous materials team were called to the IRS building at 1973 N. Rulon White Blvd. around 8 p.m. after an employee found material that was called suspicious. More than two hours later, the substance tested safe and the lockdown was lifted and employees were free to leave.

"At this point, there doesn't appear to be a federal crime involved here," said FBI spokeswoman Debbie Bertram from the Salt Lake City office.

Local agencies will handle the situation from here, she said.

No details have been released on the incident. A similar incident took place in March 2010 and several employees were sent to the hospital, but no report was issued about the material found then.

The IRS facility processes paper returns filed by businesses and at peak periods has more than 800 workers assigned to the building, according to a 2010 IRS news release.
