Salt Lake City lake reopens after pipeline leak

SALT LAKE CITY -- A popular urban lake in Salt Lake City is open again 11 months after being used to contain thousands of gallons of oil that leaked from a Chevron Corp. pipeline.

But not all residents have been eager to join a party celebrating Liberty Lake's reopening Saturday.

Angry homeowners say more contamination and cleanup needs to be done to the stream above the lake. Some are considering a lawsuit to recoup damages for devalued property along Red Butte Creek and to pay for future health issues linked to 32,000 gallons of oil spilling into the waterway.

State water quality officials say the lake is safe after the $2.5 million restoration project by Chevron and insist they will continue to investigate complaints about residual oil in the stream.
