Pedestrian hit, killed by UTA train

WEST JORDAN -- Authorities say a pedestrian has been struck and killed by a train.

Police say the woman was crossing the tracks at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred on Utah Transit Authority tracks in West Jordan while a train was testing the line. The new section is scheduled to officially open in August.

UTA spokesperson Gerry Carpenter says the accident is under investigation and that preliminary reports indicate the train and safety equipment were functioning properly. Carpenter says trains in that area travel up to 65 mph.

The victim's name or age weren't immediately available.
