Toddler pulled from Riverton canal dies

RIVERTON -- Hospital officials and family members say a toddler who fell into a Riverton canal has died.

Authorities believe 2-year-old Donaven Lopez may have been in the canal up to 45 minutes before being pulled out Tuesday afternoon. He was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City and placed on life support but family members requested it be disconnected Wednesday afternoon.

He is the fourth person to drown in Utah since Memorial Day weekend.

Riverton officials say they have repaired a 3-foot hole in the fence that the boy apparently wandered through before falling into the canal. Officials recently replaced a missing panel in the same section of the fence and are stepping up inspections along the four canals that run through Riverton.
