Ex-Wasatch County jailer charged with sex assault

SALT LAKE CITY -- A federal grand jury has indicted a former Utah corrections officer on three felony charges related to the alleged sexual assault of a female inmate.

Christopher Stein Epperson is charged in federal court in Salt Lake City with three counts of deprivation of rights under color of law, meaning he used his position of authority.

The 33-year-old Heber City man worked for the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office.

In court papers, prosecutors say a female inmate claims Epperson attempted to sexually assault her in December 2009.

U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch says Epperson was arrested Wednesday. He has denied the allegations.

An initial court appearance is set for Thursday.
