Dell Schanze arrested after paragliding off Oregon tower

ASTORIA, Ore. -- A former Utah gubernatorial candidate accused of paragliding off the 125-foot Astoria Column overlooking Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River was arrested after he was spotted at an Oregon beach.

KATU-TV in Portland reports that 41-year-old Dell Schanze of Salt Lake City was charged Monday with violating city code. A video of the Saturday jump has been posted on YouTube.

The Daily Astorian reported Schanze told the newspaper Monday he did it to entertain a friend.

The Clatsop County sheriff's office said Schanze was booked and released Monday. Deputies did not know if he had an attorney.

The Oregonian reports Schanze ran for governor of Utah as a Libertarian in 2010 and was known for an "over-the-top personal style."
