LAYTON -- Layton firefighters are investigating the cause of numerous spot fires in a resident's yard, near 280 S. Chapel St., around noon Wednesday.
Cotton from about 20 cottonwood trees added fuel, making the fire difficult to put out, said Layton Fire Prevention Specialist Doug Bitton.
No one was at the residence at the time and no was injured. A neighbor called in the fire.
This is not the first time a fire relating to cotton has occurred at this property.
"The cotton is highly combustible and is such a light, fine fuel, so when this cotton is lit it spreads fast and creates its own travel to other ignitable items or cotton," Bitton said.
The damage to property was mainly the landscaping.
Bitton said, "It is vital that homeowners be careful with this cotton, and hard as it might be, to continue to clean up any accumulations of it."
