Hearing set for man in Layton robbery case

FARMINGTON -- A man who Layton police said swung a knife at a couple that caught him breaking into their car did not appear in court.

That was so the victim "would not be tainted," said Michael Edwards, the defense attorney for Raymond Joseph Emmett, 32. Emmett is charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery, third-degree felony possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, third-degree felony possession of a controlled substance and class A misdemeanor burglary of a vehicle.

Emmett is being held in the Box Elder jail, Edwards said.

When Judge Michael G. Allphin asked if the victim was in court, a man stood up and said he was.

A preliminary hearing has been set for 11 a.m. June 28.

The Layton couple told police in March they heard the sound of a horn honking and looked out their window. The dome light in one of their cars was on, so they went outside and a man was inside the car, going through a purse, police said.
