SALT LAKE CITY -- Authorities say a 17-year-old special needs student is hospitalized with serious injuries after falling or jumping from a moving school bus on Interstate 80.
Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson says the boy appears to have opened the emergency door at the back of the bus before he fell.
It's not clear whether an alert system went off as expected when the door opened.
Johnson says the bus driver didn't realize the boy had fallen and continued driving.
Granite Schools District spokesman Ben Horsely says the boy was attending a summer program at the Hartvigsen School. He was on the bus with five other students and an attendant.
Horsely says an elderly couple in a car saw the boy fall and called 911.
