SALT LAKE CITY -- Health care workers frequently remind the public to get their influenza vaccinations, but are they practicing what they preach?

Weber resident tests positive for unusual swine flu strain

OGDEN — A Weber County resident has tested positive for an unusual strain of swine flu that has hospitalized three people in the U.S. and is not included in this year’s vaccination.

The virus has been identified in isolated cases across the nation, including in West Virginia, Maine, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Indiana. The Weber County resident was not hospitalized and is recovering at home.

The virus, A/H3N2v, was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Utah Department of Health. The strain is genetically similar to those which circulate in pigs, said Weber-Morgan Health Department Director Gary House.

Rabies clinics set at Weber shelter

OGDEN — The Weber County Animal Shelter will have two rabies clinics for pets.

The clinics will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and April 14 at the Weber County Animal Shelter, 1373 W. 750 North.

Rabies shots will cost $14. Other vaccines will also be available. For other vaccine fees, call Ogden Animal Hospital at 801-392-0633.

Owners also can microchip their pets for $15.

Officials encourage flu vaccinations before holidays

CLEARFIELD — To prevent the flu from spreading faster than holiday cheer, Top of Utah county health officials are encouraging the public to get a flu vaccination before Christmas.

LOS ANGELES -- Vaccinating children who are more than a year old against varicella, or chicken pox, also provides "tremendous indirect benefits" to young babies, researchers reported Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Free rabies vaccine clinic Saturday

OGDEN -- A rabies vaccine clinic for cats and dogs will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the gym at the Marshall White Center, 222 28th St. The clinic is part of an Eagle Scout project.

The rabies vaccine is free.

All shots will be administered by a licensed veterinarian.

Whooping cough outbreak leads to increased vaccinations

OGDEN -- The Weber/Morgan Health Department has seen a dramatic increase in immunizations since the recent outbreak of whooping cough at Mount Ogden Junior High School.

There have been seven documented cases of the highly contagious disease in students and employees at the school and two others elsewhere in the Weber-Morgan Health District.

On Friday evening it was announced students on immunization exemption can't come back to school until Nov. 14 because two more cases have been confirmed in the school.

Whooping cough outbreak sends kids home at Mount Ogden

OGDEN -- Unvaccinated Mount Ogden Junior High students will have a longer-than-expected break from school because another student and a school employee have been confirmed as having whooping cough.

Earlier this week, 65 unimmunized Mount Ogden students were sent home for at least five days after the school was notified that one of its students had been diagnosed with whooping cough.

Because of the additional cases, the school is considered to have an outbreak of whooping cough, said Glen Kinney, Weber/Morgan Health Department epidemiologist.
