Take these gift-giving tips to heart

As Feb. 14 draws near, here are some tips for how to treat those special guys and girls in your life.

For the clueless boys:

OK, guys, so maybe Valentines’ Day isn’t exactly the manliest holiday ever, and maybe you just aren’t feeling the mushy lovey-dovey concept, but making your valentine happy is pleasure in itself, right?

Honestly, if you just pay attention to your valentine (if she hasn’t already started dropping hints), you will know what she likes and doesn’t like and will have a fairly general idea of what will make her feel special.

But here are a few tips for those of you feeling distant and unsure of your gifts or maybe need some ideas.

How to know when Valentine's Day is headed for disaster

Mindy has spent weeks creating a scrapbook for hubby Joel for Valentine’s Day, filled with photos and cute notes about everything from their first date to their wedding to their best-ever Hawaiian vacation.

Joel got Mindy a card and a muffin — a pink one — that he picked up at the gas station on the way home from work.

Are you guessing this couple’s Valentine’s Day is headed for disaster faster than a box of chocolates left sitting by the romantic fireside?

Therapist suggests making the extra effort on Valentine's Day

Embrace the day, hearts and all.

That’s the message from therapist Tami Robinette, who says doing something for your sweetie — beyond saying “I love you” — is important on Valentine’s Day.

Gifts are a message, too, and add “a little oomph” to the words that are spoken, says the licensed clinical social worker at Weber State University’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Whether you buy funny presents or go to a movie, it’s about making an extra effort to tell this person he or she is special to you, she says.

Here are some tips from Robinette and other Top of Utah relationship experts on getting it right this Valentine’s Day.

Scriptures, leaders have plenty to say on the topic of love

Developing an ability to love is an important quality churches inspire for their congregations at all times of the year, not just on Valentine’s Day.

Leaders of many faiths tell us it is through love that we encourage others and find happiness for ourselves.

Valentine’s Day no lovefest for those in divorce proceedings

Next Thursday is the commercialized celebration of that greatest of human emotions — love. Florists, chocolatiers, restaurateurs, greeting card manufacturers and other fine purveyors of commercialized sentiment advertise and cajole us into letting our significant others know through the stream of commerce just how much we love them.

OGDEN -- Staff members from the Weber County Clerk/Auditor's Office put together eight red baskets loaded with chocolates, lotions and gift certificates Tuesday morning.

The baskets were wedding presents for couples coming in for Valentine's Day nuptials.

"We talked about it last year," said Weber County Clerk/Auditor Ricky Hatch, "but we didn't have enough time."

This year, the staff asked local businesses for donations.

Wondering what to buy for your favorite Valentine? Read this

Presents are probably the worst part of any holiday. Trying to make sure you spend the same amount on someone's present that they spent on you, trying to find the perfect gift that they won't just shove in the closet or dump the first chance they get, and trying to make a gift meaningful and memorable are all problems we have.

Raymond Chandler, wife reunited on Valentine's Day in San Diego cemetery

SAN DIEGO -- Mystery writer Raymond Chandler and his wife, Cissy, were reunited Monday -- more than 50 years after their deaths.

Cissy's ashes were relocated to Chandler's grave at the Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego, thanks to the persistence of a group of Chandler fans and the approval of a San Diego judge.

A hundred people, some of whom arrived in classic automobiles from the eras captured in Chandler's books, witnessed the reburial. Actor Powers Boothe, who played Chandler's famous private eye Philip Marlowe on television, was among the speakers.
