Veterans honored by Davis Junior High School students on 11-11

CLEARFIELD -- During the 11th hour of the 11th day of November, students at North Davis Junior High School honored local veterans.

The Top of Utah honors those who served

OGDEN -- They came in droves and small somber groups to cemeteries, parks, and schools in honor of the nation's military.

Weathered World War II veterans rubbed shoulders with fresh-faced, flag-toting Boy Scouts while proud parents silently prayed for the safe return of soldier sons and daughters serving in far-flung battle zones.

That star-spangled scene played out again and again at Veterans Day ceremonies held Friday throughout the Top of Utah.

Top of Utah veterans receive top honors

SALT LAKE CITY — A trio of Top of Utah veterans were honored Friday with the highest award given by the Utah Department of Veterans Affairs.

Casey Kunimura, Norm Nelson and Bob Ramos each received a Utah Distinguished Service to Veterans Award in a ceremony at the Utah State Capitol.

Kunimura lives in North Ogden and served in the Army during World War II.

Three Syracuse kids turn 11 on 11-11-11

SYRACUSE — Three Syracuse children celebrate birthdays today, turning 11 years old on the 11th day of the 11th month in the 11th year of the century.

That’s right, Bryson Harris, Jake Okelberry and Lillie Law each turn 11 on Veterans Day, a federal holiday.

Children's choir to sing at Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony in Riverdale

RIVERDALE -- The Riverdale Veterans Committee is planning a flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday. The Good Foundations Academy children's choir will perform, followed by light refreshments. The event will be held at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Riverdale Civic Center, 4600 S. Weber River Drive.

This is a rendering of the new Veterans Memorial at the Farmington Cemetery. The memorial, installed at the northwest corner of the cemetery along 200 East, will include the names of the 135 veterans buried in the cemetery.

Dedication set for new Farmington veterans memorial

FARMINGTON -- Lt. Gov. Greg Bell, former Congressman James Hansen and Farmington Mayor Scott Harbertson will take part in dedication ceremony Friday for a new Veterans Memorial at the Farmington Cemetery.

The three public officials are scheduled to speak at the Veterans Day ceremony, which is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Following long tradition, Davis students to honor veterans

From raising funds for war memorials to participating in American Junior Red Cross clubs, students even in the early days of the Davis School District felt the impact of war.

Those associations with war continue today as students write letters to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, collect supplies for members of the military to distribute overseas, and watch parents and teachers deploy.

Weber State to hold Veterans Day ceremony to honor military

OGDEN -- Weber State University on Friday will host a Veterans Day ceremony that includes military music, an honor guard and a salute to soldiers lost while serving their country.

Hooper veteran endured horror of WWII, remembers joy of those he liberated

HOOPER -- Like so many veterans of World War II, Eldin Simpson rejects the hero status so many people want to attach to him.

His country needed every soldier it could train in 1943, and Simpson ached so badly to serve that he rejected the deferment his father had secured that would have let him stay home safe on the family farm in Hooper.

OGDEN -- Ogden will host the fifth installment of what has become Utah's largest Veterans Day parade on Saturday, but that is only one of many observances and ceremonies planned this year.
