SYRACUSE -- With a super start to Saturday's championship round, the Fremont Silver Wolves claimed the Region 1 wrestling championships in action at Syracuse High School.

Fremont tallied 252.5 points, followed by Weber with 237, Syracuse with 233 and Layton with 232. Davis was fifth at 165.5, with Northridge at 58.

Fremont picked up individual wins from Jaydon Rogers at 106, York Ash at 113, A.J. Arteaga at 126, and Jake VanValkenburg at 220.

Pool heats up as prep elite vie for supremacy

During the next week, swim pools around the state will be echoing with the cheers and tears of Top of Utah high school swimmers as they battle for state qualifications and region titles at a handful of championship meets.

With Viewmont tucked into a Salt Lake region this year, the Region 1 forecast calls for a Weber High surge for both the boys and girls titles. They'll be led by top performers Elizabeth Tomon, Erin Nordhill, Brighton West, Rachel De Young, Mary Williams, and Rachel Wilding for the girls; and Chandler Ward, Tim Romney, Shea Smith, Drake Mendelson, Tim Romney, John Brasher, Josh Nguyen, and Jon Vu for the boys.

Prep notes: Top of Utah basketball teams regroup

As 2012 dawns, the changing of the calendar offers a lot of Top of Utah basketball teams the chance to regroup for the upcoming league seasons.

While Region 11 jumped into league play in December, the rest of the area leagues used the pre-league scheduled to develop their game plan.

This week's action includes a bevy of traditional matchups, formerly region games now relegated to preseason battles for "bragging rights."

Girls basketball: Layton prevails, but loses point guard

LAYTON -- Three days before Christmas and the Lancers got an early lump of coal in their stockings.

Layton High remained undefeated Thursday -- holding off the Lakers 42-35 in a non-league game -- but lost its two-year starting point guard for four weeks and maybe longer.

Senior Amber Daly suffered a possible torn tendon in the middle finger of her left (non-shooting) hand in the last two minutes of the second quarter.

The Lancers (8-0 overall) had a 20-point lead at 1:16 of the second quarter, but got outscored 25-15 during the second half.

Prep wrestling: Alta wrests Warrior Duels title away from host

PLEASANT VIEW -- Alta High wrestlers played spoilers to the host Weber Warriors as they took top honors at the Warrior Duels wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.

Mat marauders from eight schools clashed in the round-robin tournament at Weber High School as Alta's Zane Rasmussen (106), Matt Findlay (113), and Gavin Godfrey (152) won all seven matches in their respective classes on their way to the team podium's top spot.

Weber placed four wrestlers at the top of the 145, 160, 182, 220 classes to take second place, and Logan rounded out the top three, putting wrestlers at the top of the 126, 132, 138, 170 and 285 classes.

Prep basketball: Vikings rout former region foe

CLEARFIELD -- A year ago, this would have been a key Region 1 clash.

But Viewmont has been banished to Region 2 where it will play a bunch of Salt Lake schools and Clearfield has stepped away from the state 5-A ranks and now plays in 4-A Region 6.

Still, the former league rivals staged a spirited battle where the Vikings struggled early and then cruised to a comfortable 59-43 victory over the home-town Falcons on Friday evening.

Strong legacy of success in Davis School District

Standing in a circle with a group of fellow alumni, one person asked what he had gone on to do after high school. He told them he was a filmmaker.

Prep notes: Warriors, Vikings clean up in the pool

The Warriors and Vikings displayed plenty of team depth at last week's City-County and Davis District swim championships.

In the City-County Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Ben Lomond High, Weber outscored the field for boys and girls title victories.

In the girls team chase, Weber topped Fremont, with Ogden third and Roy fourth.

Prep wrestling: Bees, Warriors shine in tourneys

Tournament-tested teams tend to take state.

Weber and Box Elder claimed a pair of wrestling tournament titles last weekend, combining elite finishers and strong depth to get the job done.

Syracuse won its Titans Duals with much the same recipe for success.

Prep notes: Top preps battle for pool props

The Thanksgiving Invitational swimming meet at South Davis Recreation Center is fast becoming one of the top early meets in the Utah prep season.

With several top teams from Salt Lake City and southern Utah in the pool, Top of Utah teams still held their own in the non-scoring meet.

Individual winners on the boys side included Davis' Sam Bryson in the 50 freestyle and teammate Zach Santella in the 100 butterfly. Weber's Chandler Ward won the 100 freestyle, and Viewmont's Josh Meyers was tops in the 500 freestyle.

Prep football: Region 1 teams vie for state title

When the state football playoffs kick off in earnest this Friday, Top of Utah teams that can hang their hat on the defense will feel and added boost of comfort as the one-and-done tournaments roll toward the No. 18 tripleheader finale for 5-A, 4-A and 3-A teams at Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Region 1 wars produced a repeat champion in Fremont, and state contenders Northridge, Davis and Syracuse.

The Silver Wolves, Darts and Titans allow about 10 points per game, which could be a key as the playoffs unfold. The Knights allow 22 points per contest, but use their potent offense as a hammer to their overall game plan.

Ogden High School walked away with all of the top honors for the 1A division at Tuesday's competition, including the extra caption awards for music, visual presentation, percussion and color guard performances.

The Davis High marching band hoped to unseat American Fork, a three-year winner of the Davis Cup.

Prep soccer: Wolves move on

PLAIN CITY -- Nobody gives you an extra game at state; you have to earn it.

A handful of area girls soccer teams earned quarterfinal round games with sterling performances in Tuesday's opening round action.

Fremont was locked in a tooth-and-nail battle with Jordan, with the score tied at 1-1 late in regulation when the Silver Wolves' Mikell Minnoch blasted in the game-winning goal to secure the 2-1 victory.
