EU threatens new sanctions on Syria

BEIRUT -- The European Union will impose harsher sanctions on Syria, a senior EU official said Wednesday, as Russia tried to broker talks between the vice president and the opposition to calm violence. Activists reported at least 50 killed in military assaults targeting government opponents.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria -- A radical Muslim sect attacked a church worship service in Nigeria's northeast during assaults that killed at least 15 people, authorities said Saturday, as Christians vowed to defend themselves from the group's widening sectarian fight against the country's government.

Sheriff: Porterville couple died from murder-suicide

PORTERVILLE -- The Morgan County Sheriff's Office confirmed Friday that the deaths of a married couple in Porterville were a murder-suicide.

Family members and deputies found Grant Wadman, 57, and Marilee Wadman, 43, dead in their home at 390 W. Handscrabble Road on Thursday.

Deputies also found two bullet holes in the north-facing windows but could not confirm if they originated from inside or outside the home. They would not say if a weapon was found inside the home.

Clearfield school: Attack on girl doesn't mean your kids aren't safe

CLEARFIELD -- South Clearfield Elementary School administrators want to reassure parents that their children are in a safe learning environment.

Principal Daren Allred and Administrative Intern Mike Page spoke Tuesday about what happened to Breanna Jollerson on Nov. 8 and their actions following the attack.

"First of all, we feel bad whenever a student is injured or hurt," Allred said. "We take it personally to keep this school safe so it will be a good learning environment for our students."

Bullying victim's father 'shocked' by details

CLEARFIELD -- Breanna Jollerson returned to South Clearfield Elementary on Friday.

The 7-year-old, who sustained a concussion and a hairline fracture to her eye socket when she was attacked by a 6-year-old boy on Tuesday, wasn't too excited about returning, said her father, Patrick Jollerson, of Harrisville.

Normally Breanna rides a bus to school, but on Friday her father drove her so he could meet with the school's administrators and make sure she was in a different class.

Football players recount their response to knife attack at school

SEATTLE -- Travis Pickett was coming out of the locker room with a couple of his football buddies before school on Monday morning when he heard screaming.

As at any school, the hallways at Snohomish High School are loud, so the 17-year-old senior didn't think much of it at first. But then he saw the screaming girl coming out of the restroom, blood pouring out of her arm and a look of shock on her face.

When he went into the bathroom, he saw one girl lying on the floor and another standing still near a stall. The girl on the ground was holding her neck, he said. The other girl, the suspect, "looked nervous, but she wasn't going anywhere. She was standing there, like, 'Yeah, I did that."'

Roy Jr. High graffiti contains threats of 'bloodbath'

ROY -- Police are investigating spray-painted graffiti at Roy Junior High School as a potential hate crime, Police Chief Greg Whinham said Tuesday.

Somebody sneaked onto the grounds of the school, at 5400 S. 2100 West, early Tuesday and painted messages on the building and other items.

"The nature of the graffiti is such that it qualifies as hate speech, and we are investigating the possibility of charging the person with a hate crime," Whinham said. "Some of the messages alluded to doing harm to Christians."

ISLAMABAD — A government official says gunmen have attacked a bus carrying Shiite Muslim pilgrims in southwest Pakistan, killing 20 of them.
