Ref's death leads to worry about sports violence; many say parents key in modeling proper behavior

The sun beat down from a cloudless sky Saturday afternoon during a youth soccer game at McCall Field Park in Roy, and cheers from parents cascaded in intermittently from the sidelines as the action on the field intensified in waves, then receded.

Doubtless, similar scenes were playing out on thousands of fields across the country.

But for some parents at the park in Roy, the impact of the recent death of soccer referee Ricardo Portillo loitered in the air. Portillo died May 4, a week after a yellow-carded 17-year-old player allegedly punched him in the head in Taylorsville.

It was a chilling reminder, the parents said, of the violence that has embedded itself in youth sports.

Gun violence makes sharp decline

WASHINGTON — Gun violence has dropped dramatically nationwide over the past two decades, but nearly three-quarters of all homicides are still committed with a firearm, the Justice Department said in a report released Tuesday.

Firearms-related homicides declined 39 percent between 1993 and 2011, the report said, while nonfatal firearms crimes fell 69 percent during that period.

Violent gun crime down. Are more guns the reason?

WASHINGTON — Back in the crack-infused 1980s, young men with guns and drugs ruled the single block of Hanover Place NW in Washington, D.C. People who lived in the two-story rowhouses one mile north of the Capitol fell asleep year round to the sounds of the Fourth of July, a pop-pop-pop that they hoped was firecrackers. It rarely was.

Guns and play part of childhood for many boys

MOUNT AIRY, Md. — Chanse Mullinix arrived home from fourth grade on the school bus, carrying a Cherry Coke and a plastic bag of his classmates’ handmade valentines. He shouted goodbye to the bus driver - “See ya!” — and ran down the sidewalk, because a youth football coach had recommended once that he run everywhere. He climbed the steps to a two-story townhouse — the only home he had ever known, and the place he sometimes referred to as a “great gun museum.”

Authorities in New Mexico say Griego had reloaded his guns after the attacks and planned to go to a Wal-Mart and randomly shoot people. Instead, they say he texted a picture of his dead mother to his 12-year-old girlfriend, then spent much of Saturday with her. The two went to the church where his father had been a pastor, and Griego eventually confessed to killing his parents and three younger siblings. (AP Photo/Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deptartment)
