New bird flu has no symptons

BEIJING — Bird flu was found in a 4-year-old Beijing boy who has no symptoms of the infection, health authorities said Monday, suggesting more people may be catching the H7N9 influenza virus than reported.

The first asymptomatic H7N9 case was discovered by health care workers searching for possible cases, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau said in a statement on its website Monday. The boy’s parents are poultry and fish sellers, and their neighbors across the street had bought chicken sold by the family of a 7- year-old girl whose H7N9 infection was reported two days ago.

Scientists taking a first look at the genetics of the bird flu strain that recently killed two men in China said Wednesday the virus could be harder to track than its better-known cousin H5N1 because it might be able to spread silently among poultry without notice. New deadly bird flu strain kills 4 in China, cases growing

GENEVA — The new strain of bird flu that’s emerged in eastern China killed a fourth person, as the World Health Organization said drugs made by Roche Holding and GlaxoSmithKline are effective against the deadly virus.

Health officials say nine more deaths of children from the flu have been reported, bringing the total this flu season to 29. In a typical season, about 100 children die of the flu, so it is not known whether this year will be better or worse than usual. New deadly virus worse than SARS

GENEVA — A new pneumonia-causing virus that’s killed six people in the past year can infect the lining of a person’s airways faster than the SARS bug, a study found, though researchers still don’t know how easy it is to spread.

Highly contagious 'superbug' hitting Utahns superhard

A vicious stomach bug is sweeping the nation, and Utah is not immune.

The norovirus — which wreaks havoc on your gastrointestinal system — is nothing new. However, the strain circulating the nation is, so no one has built an immunity yet.

Dr. Courtney R. Nelson, a physician at Wasatch Peak Family Practice in Layton, said the new strain was first identified in Australia. Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, headache, body aches and fever come on rapidly, just hours after being exposed. It can stay in your system for up to two weeks or more, even after you start to feel better.

'Novel' flu strain found in Weber County

OGDEN -- A Weber County resident has tested positive for an unusual strain of influenza that has hospitalized three people in the U.S. and is not included in this year's vaccination.

The virus has been identified in isolated cases across the nation, including West Virginia, Maine, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Indiana. The Weber County resident was not hospitalized and is recovering at home.

The virus, A/H3N2v, was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Utah Department of Health. The strain is genetically similar to those which circulate in pigs, said Weber-Morgan Health Department director, Gary House.

Horse virus cases confirmed

Concern and rumors over an outbreak of equine herpes virus-1 tied to a cutting-horse event in Ogden from April 29 through May 8 continued to grow throughout the day Monday as more cases were confirmed and suspected.

One Colorado horse was confirmed to have been euthanized because of the disease.

Local and national events were canceled, including a Utah Quarter Horse Association show scheduled for Saturday at Golden Spike Event Center in Ogden.

New technique tracks viral infections

WASHINGTON -- Scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory Center for Bio-Molecular Science and Engineering have developed a method to detect the presence of viruses in cells and to study their growth.

Targeting a virus that has ribonucleic acid (RNA) as its genetic makeup, the new technique referred to as locked nucleic acid (LNA) flow cytometry-fluorescence in situ hybridization (flow-FISH), involves the binding of an LNA probe to viral RNA.

While individual parts of the technique have been developed previously, Drs.
