Hill to host volleyball event

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Hill Air Force Base will host the 2013 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Beach and Indoor Volleyball Championship.

Top of Utah volleyball products finish seasons

Several Utah colleges enjoyed sterling volleyball seasons, and one even continues as BYU prepares for its Sweet 16 contest against Oregon at Omaha, Neb.

Former Layton High standout Kathryn LeCheminant is a key member of the nationally ranked Cougars squad, now 28-3 on the season following a pair of NCAA tournament victories last week at the Smith Fieldhouse.

'Cats fall to Vikings in volleyball action

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Wildcats put up a solid road effort on Thursday night, but just didn’t have an answer for the Vikings.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Rebecca Fuchs had eight kills and junior middle blocker Briana Wilms added seven kills, but the Weber State University volleyball team fell 25-12, 25-22, 25-14 to Portland State at the Stott Center in Big Sky Conference action.

WSU volleyball squad wraps up home slate

OGDEN — The Weber State women’s volleyball team will take two final dances around the court at Swenson Gym this weekend as the Wildcats wrap up the home portion of their 2012 schedule.

Weber State will host rival Idaho State tonight, before hosting Sacramento State on Saturday in its home finale. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m.

WSU women snare wins in basketball, volleyball

OGDEN — The Weber State Wildcats opened the 2012-13 women’s basketball season with a blowout exhibition win over the Concordia Cavaliers Saturday at the Dee Events Center.

Weber State opened up a big lead early, winning 78-48.

Prep volleyball: Darts settle for third in 5-A; Bobcats win 4-A title

OREM — Too many rally killers stifled the Darts in their quest to play in consecutive state 5-A tournament championship matches.

Region 4 runner-up Pleasant Grove needed just 1 hour and 8 minutes to sweep three-time defending Region 1 champion Davis High on Saturday at Utah Valley University, snapping the nationally-ranked Darts’ 12-match winning streak.

Prep volleyball: Darts coast past Bingham, semifinal bound

OREM — Two more for the gold.

When the nationally-ranked Darts tangle with Region 4 runner-up Pleasant Grove in today’s state 5-A tournament semifinals in Utah Valley University’s Utah Community Credit Union Center, it will be their third season meeting.

Wildcats continue five-match home stand Friday

OGDEN — The Weber State University women’s volleyball team returns to action this weekend, continuing its current five-match homestand.

The Wildcats will take on Montana State on Friday afternoon at Swenson Gym, with first serve set for 4 p.m. On Saturday, Weber State will host Montana at 7 p.m.

Prep volleyball: Darts set sights on 5-A repeat

KAYSVILLE — They are three-time defending Region 1 kingpins. But can the nationally-ranked Darts repeat as state 5-A volleyball champions and become the first back-to-back winners since Lone Peak in 2007 and 2008?

“We want to win it again. No question, that’s our goal,” said Davis High senior outside hitter Camille Walker. “We all have to be on the same page, and if we all play our best then we’ll have no regrets no matter the outcome.

Prep notes: Ben Lomond alum earns MIAA honors

Perseverance is paying off for Ben Lomond alumnus Colter Smith.

Smith, starting quarterback at the University of Central Missouri, recently was named MIAA player of the week for his performance in a big 47-17 win over Central Oklahoma.

Smith was 21 of 35 for 329 yards and three touchdowns as the Mules beat Central Oklahoma 47-17 to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Prep volleyball: Jayhawks fall in 1-A title match

OREM — In consecutive years, the St. Joseph Jayhawks have finished the year in fourth place, third place and now second place. If that trend holds true, they might well be hoisting a championship trophy next year.

But it will be a long year to wait as the taste of coming so close to a title takes quite a while to get rid of.
