Chamber of Commerce names volunteer of the year

OGDEN — Sally Carter began volunteering while in elementary school, caring for disabled babies and toddlers in a small orphanage in Ohio. She has never stopped and credits her mother for setting a great example.

OGDEN — Weber State on Wednesday will host a Volunteer Fair with representatives from more than 30 community agencies offering volunteering opportunities.

Volunteers needed for Thanksgiving charity event

OGDEN — Members of area churches are invited to volunteer to help at the annual “Gift of Love” Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Marshall White Community Center, 222 28th St., in Ogden.

Volunteers sought to provide tax help

The “Community Action Partnership of Utah, the Earn it. Keep it. $ave it. Coalition” and AARP Tax-Aide are seeking community volunteers and host sites to provide free income tax help across the state.

NORTH OGDEN — After Bud Sorensen retired from Hill Air Force Base more than 25 years ago, he needed a hobby.

His wife, Clara, was still working and he didn’t want to let his life pass him by.

So he took up jewelry making and studying gems and minerals.

LAYTON — Retail giant Walmart was out painting a food bank Saturday, just one aspect of the global behemoth’s community service outreach.

Farr West looking for July 4 volunteers

FARR WEST — Volunteers are needed for the annual Farr West Freedom Festival, which will be held on Wednesday, July 4.

There will also be activities leading up to the Fourth of July celebration, and volunteers may select activities and days they could offer their assistance.

Bountiful recognizes local teenager

Daphne O’Rullian was honored with a volunteer service award recently by the city council.

O’Rullian, who was crowned as the 2011 Miss Utah Junior National Teenager, was cited for her service in the community. The Bountiful teenager has been particularly active in volunteer efforts at the Boys and Girls club in Salt Lake City.

Ogden's assistant police chief announces retirement after 30 years

OGDEN — Assistant Police Chief Marcy Korgenski will retire March 15 after 30 years with the Ogden Police Department.

Korgenski, the city’s first female assistant chief, said she has enjoyed her work in law enforcement but wants to spend more time with family and concentrate on volunteer activities in the Ogden area.

Doctor protects Brigham City area's protectors

BRIGHAM CITY -- Dr. Lance Bryce trades one front line for another when he goes from a local hospital trauma unit to ride along on Brigham City Police SWAT calls.

Volunteer Janet “Nan” Lujan, 73, helps students arrive safely at Sunset Elementary School on Thursday. She walks several blocks each school day to help students cross 250 West in front of the school and keeps them out of the parking lot as parents and staff pull in.
