WSU to host volunteer fair on Wednesday

OGDEN — Weber State University’s Community Involvement Center will host a volunteer fair from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Shepherd Union Atrium.

Representatives from more than 30 community agencies will be on hand to offer volunteer opportunities.

Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah efforts sustained by LDS faithful

OGDEN — “Shopping” for groceries at the Catholic Community Services Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank will be more pleasant for low-income clients after shelving is installed by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Officials recently announced approval from Smith’s Food and Drug Community Affairs to provide the shelving and a promise from members of the LDS Ogden, Utah, stake to provide the labor to install it.

“I told (CCS of Northern Utah Director Marcy Valdez) if there were any costs involved, we would love to pay for that,” said Scott Handy, chairman of the Ogden stake special projects committee. “We will go down and set up the shopping experience.”

Credit union employees invest in Roy students

ROY -- America First Credit Union has a partnership with Lakeview Elementary School in Roy, providing fundraising and volunteers.

On Wednesday at the school, students did the limbo with the help of employees from the credit union, and credit union employees gave students cookies at lunch.

Our spotlight this month is on the new food distribution system at the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank run by Catholic Community Services in Ogden. This Client Choice program allows people being served to actually choose exactly what their family needs from each category of food being offered. Moving to this new plan allows the client a more flexible, personal choice and creates less waste. In short, this gives people in need a more pleasant shopping experience.

Davis volunteers help with wind cleanup

A huge effort that spanned from the tiniest hands delivering hot chocolate to men driving National Guard dump trucks and backhoes changed the face of debris-filled neighborhoods Sunday.

Fearing another wind storm that could create more damage with debris from Thursday's storm, a massive response involving thousands of volunteers to haul away uprooted trees and broken yard furniture sprang up early Sunday morning.

AARP Tax-Aide, the largest free tax-preparation service in the country, is looking for volunteer tax counselors to prepare basic income taxes at no charge for seniors and low- and moderate-income taxpayers from Feb. 1-April 15. This community service is provided at local senior centers or libraries. Basic tax knowledge and computer literacy is required, and Spanish speakers are needed. The United Way of Northern Utah and Weber Human Services Volunteer Center would like to highlight United Way Turkey Drive.

As the holidays approach, all the agencies in Northern Utah are looking ahead to see what will be needed to make this a joyous season. The United Way Turkey Drive is scheduled to run from Nov. 12-19. Over 1,000 turkeys and/or small hams are needed to fill holiday baskets at the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank.

Dropoff locations are the food bank at 2504 F Avenue, the Standard-Examiner, 332 Standard Way (in Business Depot Ogden) during office hours or at United Way of Northern Utah, 2955 Harrison Blvd., from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day but Sunday.
