Davis/Weber Rocky Mountain Hospice needs volunteers. Our volunteers provide respite care, companionship, and assistance to terminally ill patients and their families. We provide volunteers with 12 hours of training. Background check required. For more information about becoming a volunteer contact Susan at 801-525-4803.

Division of Juvenile Justice Services needs your help. Volunteers are needed to tutor, mentor, teach skills and hobbies, organizer recreation events, make quilts, provide office/clerical help, and interact with at-risk youth in a variety of settings. I thought I'd pass on a couple of examples of people working to make the world a better place, and advice on a fun way to tell if you are succeeding.

Lifetime Products volunteers help refurbish USU Botanical Gardens

KAYSVILLE -- Florescent green shirts dotted the landscape Saturday at the Utah State University Botanical Gardens as more than 1,000 volunteers from Lifetime Products planted, landscaped, cleaned ponds and did other maintenance tasks.

American Red Cross of Northern Utah provides assistance in times of disaster; courses in first aid, CPR, and water safety; a way to connect with family members overseas in the military; and utility assistance for the elderly and disabled. Volunteers are needed to assist with preparedness education and emergency supply efforts, promote and coordinate programs at health fairs, entering shelter information, and much more. United Way of Davis County needs volunteers to help on the fund distribution, marketing and campaign committees. Top of Utah teens to help revamp Bluff Trail in Ogden

OGDEN -- Close to 1,000 local teens will be hard at work Saturday morning to help bring Bluff Trail back to life.

Students receive $3,000 scholarship based on service

OGDEN — Nine high school seniors and one current Weber State University student are learning the value of service.

The Rotary Club of Ogden presented each of the students with a $3,000 scholarship.

Free tax prep offered in Ogdenthrough Monday

OGDEN -- People with low to moderate incomes who have not yet filed their income taxes are invited to take advantage of free tax preparation services through Monday at the Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership, 3159 Grant Ave. in Ogden.

AARP Tax-Aide, the largest free tax-preparation service in the country, is looking for volunteer tax counselors to prepare basic income taxes at no charge for seniors and low- and moderate-income taxpayers from Feb. 1-April 15. This community service is provided at local senior centers or libraries. Basic tax knowledge and computer literacy is required, and Spanish speakers are needed. Abundant Life Social Services provides detailed assessments and evaluations as well as make recommendations based on current research in the social and behavioral sciences. Volunteers are needed to join the board of directors. For more information contact Darwin Crosland at 801-244-0084.

American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. FRUIT HEIGHTS — More face time for Davis County animal shelter dogs and cats, both in the community and online, has pet adoptions moving faster than a greyhound.

And Davis County Animal Care and Control officials are lapping it up.

WSU honored six consecutive years for exemplary service

OGDEN — For a sixth consecutive year, the Corporation for National and Community Service has named Weber State University to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service.

The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement.

Men real cool D.O.G.S. at Ogden school

OGDEN — Walking the beat in the halls of Horace Mann Elementary School is a new breed of Watch D.O.G.S., keeping the peace.

That breed would be human. About 40 men have joined the school’s new program as D.O.G.S., which stands for Dads of Great Students.

'Disaster junkies' help communities rebuild

Senior citizens in Layton help first-graders build reading skills

LAYTON — First-graders need all the practice they can get reading aloud to adults, says the reading coach at Knowlton Elementary.

Residents at Apple Village Assisted Living in Layton have the time and willingness to sit and listen to students read, she added.
