OGDEN -- The United Way of Northern Utah and Weber Human Services would like to applaud the efforts of the community for making the annual turkey drive a success and encourage your giving to extend beyond Thanksgiving and into the holiday season.

Our spotlight this month is on the new food distribution system at the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank run by Catholic Community Services in Ogden. This Client Choice program allows people being served to actually choose exactly what their family needs from each category of food being offered. Moving to this new plan allows the client a more flexible, personal choice and creates less waste. In short, this gives people in need a more pleasant shopping experience.

AARP Tax-Aide, the largest free tax-preparation service in the country, is looking for volunteer tax counselors to prepare basic income taxes at no charge for seniors and low- and moderate-income taxpayers from Feb. 1-April 15. This community service is provided at local senior centers or libraries. Basic tax knowledge and computer literacy is required, and Spanish speakers are needed. Abundant Life Social Services provides detailed assessments and evaluations as well as make recommendations based on current research in the social and behavioral sciences. Volunteers are needed to join the board of directors. For more information contact Darwin Crosland at 801-244-0084.

The Senior Companion Program needs volunteers to help the homebound elderly. Work 20-40 hours per week, benefits included. Must be at least 60 years old and have own transportation. For information call Natalie at 801-625-3774.

Serenity House/BRIDGE Program needs interested individuals or groups to adopt a room to redecorate. Contact Pam Boydston at 801-394-0267.

Super Sunday Sing Along needs volunteers to drive members back and forth to center each Sunday from 2-3:30 p.m. Also needs volunteers to make fliers and posters to educate community about what center does. Contact Penny Davis at 801-497-9313.

The United Way of Northern Utah and Weber Human Services Volunteer Center would like to highlight United Way Turkey Drive.

As the holidays approach, all the agencies in Northern Utah are looking ahead to see what will be needed to make this a joyous season. The United Way Turkey Drive is scheduled to run from Nov. 12-19. Over 1,000 turkeys and/or small hams are needed to fill holiday baskets at the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank.

Dropoff locations are the food bank at 2504 F Avenue, the Standard-Examiner, 332 Standard Way (in Business Depot Ogden) during office hours or at United Way of Northern Utah, 2955 Harrison Blvd., from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day but Sunday.

Habitat for Humanity of Weber and Davis counties is looking for individuals to serve as 04/13/2009: vice president, PR/communications chairperson, faith relations chairperson, fundraising chairperson and grant writer. Contact Carolyn at 801-475-9821.

Habitat for Humanity of Weber and Davis Counties, a 100 percent volunteer organization that partners with low- and moderate-income families to help them build and buy their own homes, is seeking volunteers to help with the construction process on a home in Ogden. Work parties generally take place on Saturdays and additional days as needed. The Weber/Davis Habitat office is at 2261 Adams Ave., Ogden (YCC building, Room 208B.) An Inspiration Hospice Volunteer Training program is recruiting prospective volunteers from the Northern Utah area to become certified to provide one-on-one visits to patients in Davis, Weber and Box Elder counties.

Training manuals, materials and supplies are provided for the training at no cost. We do ask that once a person is trained and becomes certified that they will commit to a minimum of six months with two to four hours a week of patient care visits and participate in our 11th hour Program. Training is held from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17, 19, 24 and 26 at Inspiration Hospice main offices, 835 E. 4800 South, Murray.
