Wahlquist Junior High School

Mike Brown takes a kick at JJ Allen while practicing at One Hit MMA in Layton on Wednesday. For years, Brown has coached middle school wrestling, but kickboxing is still new to him. He began fighting MMA in August as a way to fight weight gain from medication he’s taking for Crohn’s disease. (BENJAMIN ZACK/Standard-Examiner)

Wrestling coach with Crohn's putting up a fight -- an MMA fight

LAYTON — A former high school wrestling star struck by a chronic disease in adulthood is planning a comeback, this time in mixed martial arts.

Mike Brown started wrestling when he was in the sixth grade. That was the year he also won his first tournament.

After that, he wrestled for Central Davis Junior High School, losing only twice during those three middle school years. At Layton High School, he became a region champion his sophomore year and took third place in state as a senior.

After college, Brown began working in the juvenile justice system and then Wahlquist Junior High School as an academic counselor. He was also given the job as the school’s wrestling coach, in addition to coaching wrestling at Rocky Mountain Junior High School.

Then he got sick. Very sick.

Farr West officials debate if and when sidewalks will be needed near Wahlquist Jr. High

FARR WEST — With many students living within walking distance of the new Wahlquist Junior High School, to be built at 2450 W. 2700 North, city council members recently approved a conditional-use permit for sidewalks in the area.

Council members discussed if and when sidewalks would be put in east of the school. Planning Commissioner Lou Best said the commission was recommending approval of the conditional-use permit, but said a sidewalk to the south of 2700 North also needed to be addressed by the council.

Public hearing set for Wahlquist permit

FARR WEST -- A public hearing has been set for 7 p.m., Thursday, May 3, during the regularly scheduled council meeting at City Hall, 1896 N. 1800 West, to discuss a conditional use permit for the new Wahlquist Junior High School.

A joint work session with the planning commission and city council was also approved for 6 p.m., that night, immediately prior to the council meeting at City Hall to discuss the sensitive land ordinance.

(MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner) Students from Wahlquist Junior High School sing and dance for students at Dee Elementary School in Ogden on Thursday.

Students help students by tutoring, performing and donating books

OGDEN -- Kalle Kennedy has loved tutoring students at Dee Elementary School each week so far this year, but appreciation reached new heights recently when she and her fellow students got to read to students from books they had donated to the students.

The students participated in a special Christmas project with Dee that has been going on for 35 years thanks to the efforts of Wahlquist Junior High School Spanish teacher Gary Turner. Turner used to work with a nurse who worked with a Hispanic family of migrant workers. His students had helped provide Christmas for families of migrant workers, and when he found out most of the students of the families went to Dee school, he expanded the Christmas project to the whole school.
