Storm knocks out power to 30,000 in SLC area

SALT LAKE CITY  -- About 30,000 homes and businesses in Salt Lake County and surrounding areas have lost power because of a storm packing winds up to 70 mph.

Rocky Mountain Power says 17,000 customers in Tooele and Grantsville had outages shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday. Other outages were reported on Salt Lake City's west side and 30 miles to the north in Ogden.

The storm also may be to blame for an accident in which a FedEx semi-trailer rig crashed through barriers on Interstate 15 in Salt Lake City. No injuries were reported but the wreckage was blocking the two right northbound lanes.

The storm also brought rain, hail and lightning to areas that already are water-logged and flooded due to recent wet weather.
