Lightning kills Utah Boy Scout, injures another

SCOFIELD  -- A 12-year-old Boy Scout is dead and another injured after lightning struck a camp at a central Utah reservoir.

The Deseret News reports two members of a Salt Lake County scout troop were heading for shelter Wednesday afternoon as a hailstorm moved through the area.

John Gailey of the Utah National Parks Council tells the newspaper one boy was struck directly. Staff performed CPR until paramedics arrived by helicopter and pronounced the boy dead.

The second boy had some burns and said he felt ill. He was taken to the hospital.

The Scofield Boy Scout Camp is located on Scofield Reservoir in Carbon County. Boys sleep in tents and participate in water activities.
