Stewart wants to fire his public defenders

OGDEN — Second District Judge Noel S. Hyde on Tuesday ordered a May 31 hearing to consider a request from Matthew David Stewart to fire his public defenders.

Stewart has told the court he wants to use attorneys he selects to defend him against aggravated murder charges in the Jan. 4 shootout with police that resulted in the death of one officer.

The May 31 hearing will be to question Stewart in more detail about his decision to hire private attorneys and to explore whether Stewart is indigent and qualifies for public defenders.

Weber County hiring economic development director, hoping fresh eye will attract businesses

OGDEN — The Weber County Commission wants to change the way business is done in the county.

The Board of County Commissioners announced this week that it is rethinking “the business model upon which the county’s economic development efforts operate.”

The county hopes to diversify its economic development efforts and will hire someone in-house to accomplish this.

UDOT: 2012 will be a record-breaking year for roadwork

OGDEN — Get ready for a busy commute — 2012 will be the busiest road construction season in history.

The Utah Department of Transportation has released its 20 most significant road projects for the upcoming construction season as part of its “Know Where Know Why” campaign.

The list includes significant work on some of UDOT’s largest projects, which are all scheduled for completion this year, said UDOT spokesman Nate McDonald.

Prosecutor awaits forensics in accused Roy High bomber case

OGDEN — Weber County Prosecutor Letitia Toombs said Wednesday morning in 2nd District Juvenile Court that she is awaiting a forensic analysis of computer data seized from the home of accused Roy High School bomber Joshua Hoggan.

HUNTSVILLE — A Meet the Candidates Night for Republican 1st Congressional District candidates will be held tonight the Ogden Valley Library, 131 S. 7400 East.

The candidates are incumbent Rob Bishop and challengers Leonard Fabiano and Jacqueline Smith.

Morgan ranked Utah's healthiest county -- again

MORGAN — For the third year in a row, Morgan County is the healthiest county in the state, according to a national report.

The County Health Rankings report, conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, compares counties in a number of categories, including healthy behavior, clinical care and social and economic factors.

10 in Top of Utah arrested during national immigration roundup

OGDEN — Ten people in Weber, Davis and Box Elder counties were arrested last week as part of a nationwide roundup of convicted criminal immigrants, immigration fugitives and immigration violators.

Operation Cross Check resulted in more than 3,100 arrests nationwide, including 54 in Utah, according to information released Monday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Weber County building evacuated due to smoke smell Tuesday

OGDEN — Occupants evacuated an auxiliary building at the Weber County Human Services offices Tuesday morning after smelling smoke.

A fire alarm went off around 8:45 a.m. at 238 27th St. next to an adult residential facility.

Meeting seeks input on Weber Coalition for a Healthy Community

OGDEN — The public is invited to attend a town hall meeting with the Weber Coalition for a Healthy Community.

The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 5 at Weber Human Services, 237 26th St., in the third-floor auditorium. Attendees are encouraged to give input on the direction of the Weber Coalition. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Spanish interpreters will be available.
