Weber library gets loud for annual Teddy Bear Picnic

ROY — Teddy bears were in rich abundance Monday night as families participated in Weber County Library South Branch’s Teddy Bear Picnic.

Ogden offers a variety of Cinco de Mayo activities

OGDEN — Car shows, artwork and dancing are some of the activities that will celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

In 1862, a ragtag group of Mexicans fought back the army of Napolean III, helping oust French occupiers from Mexican soil.

On the 150th anniversary of the famous battle, Latinos from diverse backgrounds in Utah — not just Mexicans — will use the day to share their culture with the community.

Weber libraries add 30K new e-books

OGDEN — Weber County Library System added more than 30,000 eMedia books to its collection.

Community classes help seniors become computer savvy

OGDEN -- Debbie Daniel was pleased when she had to add two extra computer classes to her community schools roster at Mount Ogden Junior High School.

There is also a waiting list for the computer classes. Daniel oversees the evening classes for the school's community schools program. The extra bonus for her has been the number of adults age 50 and older who are rapidly signing up for the classes.

She loves visiting with the group as they come to the classes, which are taught by the school's teachers.

She has one 87-year-old class member who loves to talk about what he has learned.

Talk on Civil War set for Wednesday

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Weber State on Wednesday will present "Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War."

Weber libraries offer help to kids after school

OGDEN — The Weber County Library system offers a free after-school program to help kids learn skills in math, science, technology and crafts.

The program is designed for elementary-aged children and is offered at these locations:

• Ogden Valley Branch, 131 S. 7400 East, Huntsville;

• Pleasant Valley Branch, 5568 S. Adams Ave., Ogden; and

• Southwest Branch, 1950 W. 4800 South, Roy.

The program will be offered until May 23.

Weber's main library using $40K to upgrade computers

OGDEN — The Weber County Main Library’s public computer lab is getting new computers.

The library’s Board of Trustees has designated its $40,059 Community Library Enhancement Fund Award to the computer upgrade.

* During a presentation this week at Weber State University, Eric Swedin, a WSU associate professor of history, will analyze what could have happened if the Cuban Missile Crisis had led to war.

Swedin is the author of seven books, including "When Angels Wept: A What-if History of the Cuban Missile Crisis." The free event will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the WSU Lindquist Alumni Center, 3848 Harrison Blvd., Ogden.

Library offers program on pruning

WASHINGTON TERRACE — If your shrubs are getting a little out of control, you can learn how to prune at the library. Sure, there are books about pruning, but Weber County Library is hosting a presentation on pruning.

The presentation starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Valley Branch, 5568 Adams Ave.

Theresa Lamberson, a master gardener, will explain how to prune trees, shrubs and roses to improve their shape, get rid of deadwood and clear out rubbing branches. Admission is free.

Civil War to be topic of free talk at Weber library

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Weber State University’s history department and Weber County Library will present a free talk on the Civil War at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Library, 5568 Adams Ave.

Weber County Library to examine facility’s needs

OGDEN — When the Weber County Main Library was built in 1968, the most taxing item to its electrical system was an IBM typewriter.

Oscar party planned at Ogden library branch

OGDEN — The Weber County Library will throw an Oscar party Sunday afternoon to let residents get a taste of the festivities surrounding the annual movie awards.

The program will be at the Pleasant Valley Branch, 5568 Adams Ave., Ogden, beginning at 4 p.m. with a red carpet party before the 5 p.m. show on the library’s big movie screen.

The red carpet party will include door prizes and refreshments. A special award will be made for whomever successfully predicts which film wins “best picture.”
