Search and rescue team member unhurt after being buried in avalanche

MONTE CRISTO — A member of the Weber County Search and Rescue Team escaped without injury after being buried in an avalanche Friday morning near Whiskey Hill in the Monte Cristo area.

The incident happened about 11 a.m., said Weber County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Toll.

The name of the volunteer search and rescue team member was not released.

Sheriff’s vehicles at West Haven school for training

WEST HAVEN — The Rocky Mountain Junior High School parking lot was filled with Weber County Sheriff’s vehicles from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Friday was a short day at the school, with staff and students let out at 12:30 p.m. This allowed the sheriff’s training to go on during the afternoon.

Deputies participated in “Active Shooter Training” at the school to stay current on their skills in the event they are called out to an incident.

West Haven, Hooper creating joint police department after sheriff’s negotiations fall apart

City officials of West Haven and Hooper are working quietly to establish a joint police department instead of contracting with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

Weber County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Klint Anderson said the Hooper City Council discussed forming a police department in a Thursday night work session.

Anderson said he is unsure how many officers would be hired by the department or the budget for the agency. “I don’t know what they are going to do,” he said. “We wish them the best.”

ROY — Weber County Sheriff’s deputies resolved a situation without incident Thursday evening after receiving information that a woman in a Roy home planned to harm herself.

Police are seeking information on who vandalized a Davis County Sheriff's Office D.A.R.E. car  and the garage door of a a Weber County sheriff's deputy early Saturday morning. The incidents happened  between midnight and 6 a.m. in the area of 1200 East and 5800 South. Anyone with information can call the Weber dispatch center at 801-629-8221. SOUTH OGDEN — The shiny red D.A.R.E. car, a 2007 Saturn Sky, is now covered with black spray paint, which will cost thousands of dollars to remove and repaint.

“We have these cars for the kids and the community,” said Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Cole Thon, the D.A.R.E. officer at West Point Junior High School.

The car’s D.A.R.E. motto, “To resist drugs and violence,” is barely visible under the black paint. Black paint also covered the car’s windows and hubcaps.

 West Haven misses deadline for sheriff's contract

WEST HAVEN — The city of West Haven is the only municipality currently contracting with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office that hasn’t approved a new agreement for continued law enforcement services.

The deadline for cities to accept new contracts was Friday, said Weber Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Klint Anderson.

Washington Terrace, Huntsville, Uintah, Plain City, Marriott-Slaterville, Farr West and Hooper have agreed to new contracts, either verbally or in writing, Anderson said. The municipalities don’t have their own police departments.

Washington Terrace, Uintah agree to extend contract with Weber sheriff

OGDEN — With an Aug. 31 deadline looming, two municipalities have agreed to contract extensions with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office for services.

Washington Terrace will pay the sheriff’s office $780,981, a $53,274 reduction from its current contracted amount, while Uintah will pay $105,327, a $37,060 increase.

Six other municipalities without their own police departments that will be required to pay more to the sheriff’s office for services or find an alternative are: West Haven, Hooper, Plain City, Farr West, Marriott-Slaterville and Huntsville.

Ogden bank robber sues police for gunshot wounds

OGDEN — A bank robber shot by police following a dramatic crime spree that culminated in a quiet South Ogden neighborhood last year is suing the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael S. Ames, 46, alleges his civil rights were violated and that Deputy Todd Christensen used improper lethal force when he shot and wounded him.

“I’ve had incredible physical and mental injury,” Ames said in the handwritten complaint filed last week in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City. “I was shot five times total. This shattered my hip, destroyed my digestive tract, and (caused) numerous soft tissue injuries. I am suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder also. I now wear a colostomy bag and no longer have normal use of my bowels.”

OGDEN — Families of Autism and Asperger’s Standing Together and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday will partner for free workshops aimed at equipping parents and first responders with important information.

Bonneville students donate $7,000 to Weber County Sheriff’s Office

OGDEN — Students at Bonneville High School presented Weber County sheriff’s officers with a donation of $7,000 on Friday.

The money was raised throughout the school year through a variety of efforts spearheaded by the school’s student government, said Deputy Jeff Lemberes.
