Trail gems attached to the river parkways

This month we feature two small loops that are reached by the Weber and Ogden River parkways. Both are easy to hike, even when snow-covered.

The Kingfisher Wetlands Loop is a lovely, secluded and partly shaded trail connected to the Weber River Parkway. It features many birds of multiple varieties, wetlands, beautiful vistas and an occasional turtle.

On the Deuel Creek Trail in Centerville

The Deuel Creek Trail is a beautiful hike up Centerville canyon that can be enjoyed during any season. The trail can be accessed on either the north or south side of the canyon with a kiosk marking each trailhead. Shade, granite rock and small waterfalls highlight the trail.

An ideal hike is to begin hiking from the south trailhead and return on the north trail. From the south trail kiosk, this pleasant, two-mile loop begins by following an old pipeline until it meets the creek at one-quarter mile. After the junction with the creek, the trail follows the cool and shady canyon bottom along the tumbling stream. The trail crosses the creek several times on bridges built and maintained by a Centerville resident. A wide variety of wildlife can frequently be seen along the trail.

Farr West councilman gives advice to board

FARR WEST -- Councilman Michael Lunt, whose term is ending, had advice for the council members in the coming year.

He suggests they follow up with the city's Emergency Preparedness Program and work with the sheriff's office on updating it so that, should there be an emergency in the city, residents and staff would know where to go and what to do.

True nature: Weber Pathways will welcome Wyoming author Mark Spragg

Mark Spragg grew up in Wyoming -- and it is often the setting of his books.

"I know when the grass goes to seed, which constellations are in the sky at what time of year, and when they set on the horizon," he said. "I know the way limestone smells after it's struck by lightning."

The author of the memoir "Where Rivers Change Direction," as well as the novel and screenplay for the film "An Unfinished Life," is the speaker at this year's Weber Pathways Author Event. The fundraiser starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Ogden's Timbermine Restaurant.
