An American story: 'Weber Reads the Founders and their Documents'

Many cities around the country have book discussion groups, but Weber Reads is unlike most of those, according to volunteer coordinator Margaret Rostkowski.

For one thing, she says, Ogden is the ideal city because it is small enough that a lot of people know each other, yet large enough to have resources such as Weber State University.

Weber County school districts prep for wireless future

OGDEN -- The Weber and Ogden school districts are working to prepare for a wireless future.

Last summer, Weber School District completed a program to put 100 percent coverage in its secondary schools. The Ogden School District recently funded the technology to equip all its schools with wireless Internet access.

"Every secondary school has approximately 100 percent coverage from our network," said Dave Brooks, Weber School District technology director. "Our kids can bring their devices, and with our Weber District credentials, get on our wireless system."

Weber School District making strides with preschools

OGDEN — Happy sounds emanate from the preschool room at Canyon View Elementary. Young children shout out colors and raise their hands to answer other questions as they gather around their preschool teachers to talk about their lesson for the day. Brightly colored students’ art projects hang from the ceiling and everyone is happy — teachers included.

It’s a regular Friday afternoon at the school, which houses special needs students and one of the five preschools in the Weber School District. Things have changed quite a bit from last year’s picture of preschool in the district and changed for the better.

The state girls soccer tournaments jump into action this afternoon, with the top teams angling for an appearance later this month at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Region 1 will send four squads into the state 5-A bracket, with Davis and Fremont earning home games after tying for the league title, and Northridge and Weber facing big road battles this afternoon.

Region 2 champion Viewmont is also one of the top teams in the 5-A ranks. The Vikings reached the title game a year ago before falling to Brighton.

Region 5 champion Bonneville is one of two Top of Utah schools to bear the defending champ label -- St. Joseph is the other -- but the young Lakers appear equal to the task.
