John L. Smith introduced as new Arkansas coach

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- John L. Smith reintroduced himself to Arkansas by providing a dose of exactly what the school needed.

Smith pounced on every question about his surprise hire with a smile, showing the same level of enthusiasm and energy the Razorbacks had come to expect during his three seasons as an assistant.

Petrino says John L. Smith "a great hire" for Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- John L. Smith knows the Arkansas football program well and has a vested interest in its continued success. So a chance to help clean up the mess made by coach Bobby Petrino was too good to pass up.

Toastmasters group will meet Monday

Weber State University’s Alumni Association on Monday will host its weekly meeting of Toastmasters International.

The meeting will be at noon at the Lindquist Alumni Center. Visitors are welcome to attend this free event.

Discussion on education set at WSU

Weber State on Tuesday will present a Taboo Talk titled “Education in America: Are We Preparing Young People to be Informed, Educated and Civic-minded Voters?”

The free panel and audience discussion will be 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Wildcat Theater in the Shepherd Union Building.

'Wildcat Carl' Arky named Utah sportscaster of the year

OGDEN -- Weber State radio play-by-play announcer Carl Arky has been honored as the 2011 Utah Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Arky is in his 14th season as the radio voice for Weber State Athletics and is veteran sportscaster in the state of Utah. He calls every regular season and postseason football and men's basketball game for the Wildcats.

Arky began his career at Weber State in 1998 when he worked as a member of the WSU Athletic Department, serving as the director of broadcast services for five years, before moving on in September 2002 to become the afternoon sports anchor at KFNZ Sports Radio in Salt Lake City. Arky continued to broadcast WSU football and men's basketball games for the Wildcats.

Thane Park Rogers

Thane Park Rogers, born June 7, 1924, died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. Services will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 10, at Walker Mortuary, 45 W. 200 North, Morgan. A viewing for friends and family will be held before the service, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Interment, South Morgan Cemetery. WSU team advances to national Ethics Bowl championship

OGDEN -- A team of Weber State students has taken top regional honors in a "bowl game" of a different sort.

The WSU team won the 11th annual Wasatch Regional Ethics Bowl Competition and will advance to the national championship March 1 in Cincinnati.

OGDEN -- Of all the tributes that were offered to Coach Mac on Saturday for his final home game at Stewart Stadium, the most fitting was a last-minute win by the Wildcats.
