Aggies' Pane tabbed WAC basketball player of the week

LOGAN -- Utah State men's basketball player Brockeith Pane has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week it was announced by the league office Monday. It is the first time in his career that Pane has been named WAC player of the week.

Pane, a 6-foot-1 senior point guard from Dallas, Texas (Carter HS/Midland JC) led Utah State to a 69-62 home win against in-state rival Brigham Young in both team's season opener Friday.

College basketball: Aggies get first taste of new season

LOGAN -- In the first half, the mighty Smith Spectrum meant nothing to Adams State.

Despite the fact that the non-Division 1 Grizzlies were in a building where Stew Morrill-coached teams have lost just 13 times in 12 years -- and aside from the reality that they had played just a day earlier, a 61-60 victory over Utah in Salt Lake City -- Adams State was knotted at 29 with the Aggies at halftime.

But enter the solid play of a couple of freshman after intermission -- including one whose redshirt status was in question even weeks ago -- and the USU was able to hold the Grizzlies scoreless for nearly the first six minutes of the second half, winning 73-63.

Johansen

Outside the limelight is alright for USU's Johansen

LOGAN -- Through his time at Utah State, wide receiver Josh Johansen has given it his all as a part of the Aggie football team. Even though he has seen action in just one game of his college career, he shows up to every practice and works hard.

"It's all for the love of football," Johansen said. "It's been a part of my life for so long that I couldn't not have it."

Johansen, a senior from Kaysville, played for Davis High School. He lettered in three seasons during his high school career and was named to the all-region second team. When it came time to go to college, the game wasn't something he was ready to give up.

Meltdown! Louisiana Tech comes back, beats Utah State 24-17

LOGAN — This time, it wasn’t a botched onside kick, a fumbled punt return deep in their own territory or a yielded 50-yard heave, as it had been earlier in the season.

No, Saturday afternoon at Romney Stadium, Utah State was creative in losing in a whole other way. Failed short-yardage conversions and failed punts helped keep the Aggies from rallying in a 24-17 defeat against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Bulldogs quarterback Colby Cameron entered the game late in the third quarter to help guide Louisiana Tech to the victory, marking the seventh consecutive game in which the Aggies have yielded a fourth-quarter lead. The junior was 4-for-6 for 38 yards after taking the field with his team trailing 17-14.

Aggies not taking Bulldogs for granted

Utah State offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin couldn't stop gushing about the play of the offensive line during the Aggies' 63-19 throttling of Wyoming in Logan last weekend, a game that helped earn freshman quarterback Chuckie Keeton Western Athletic Conference offensive player of the week honors.

The 18-year-old completed 16-21 passes for 228 yards and a school-record tying five touchdowns, becoming just the fourth Aggie signal-caller in history to perform the latter.

"It's the closest our O-line has gotten to make Chuckie perfect," said Baldwin of a group that did not allow one sack in the Aggies' first win against an FBS opponent this season. "Chuckie only had to scramble one time. It was more of a seven-on-seven feeling for him, rather than moving in the pocket and throwing quickly."

College football: Broncos roll by 50 in Cali

FRESNO, Calif. -- Geraldo Boldewijn caught two touchdown passes in his first game back from suspension and No. 5 Boise State extended its dominance over former WAC rival Fresno State in a 57-7 victory Friday night. Kellen Moore went 23 of 31 for 254 yards and three scores in his 43rd career win for the Broncos (5-0).

Boise State led 30-0 before Fresno State (2-4) even crossed midfield, and it took a 43-0 lead early in the third quarter on Doug Martin's 1-yard run to extend a run of 104 straight points against the Bulldogs. D.J. Harper added a 3-yard TD run later in the quarter after an interception by Derek Carr and the streak finally ended at 111 straight points when Devon Wylie returned a punt 79 yards for a score on the first play of the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs.

The Broncos scored the final 10 points in a 51-34 victory here in 2009 and beat the Bulldogs 51-0 at home last year. They then scored the first 50 points of this game.

Aggie offense finally hits high gear

LOGAN -- Though Utah State's play in the first half Saturday night against Weber State made it seem like a different team played the near-stunner against BCS defending national champion Auburn a week earlierk, things sure seemed to resemble USU's Sept. 3 performance in the second half against the Wildcats.

Behind running back Robert Turbin's 181-yard rushing game -- part of the first 400-yard rushing performance for the Utah State football program since 1966 -- the Aggies scored 44 unanswered points Saturday at Romney Stadium to send Weber State back to Ogden licking their wounds. For Turbin, he and his fellow back's success all about the men in front of him.

"There is more of a core factor with the offensive line than in the past," Turbin said. "You used to not see the line doing extra work in the weight room without the coaches. But this group wants to be great."

Aggies pull away from Wildcats late

LOGAN -- Everything you need to know about Utah State's second-half dominance over Weber State can be summed up by one USU scoring drive in the fourth quarter: Three plays, 99 yards, 1:10 off the clock.

Junior running back Robert Turbin rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns as the Aggies rolled up 440 yards on the ground and coasted to a 54-17 victory over the in-state rival Wildcats on Saturday at Romney Stadium.

"Turbo" turned on the jets for his ninth career 100-yard rushing game and Michael Smith had a 60-yard touchdown scamper and 91 yards rushing to contribute to Utah State's first 400-yard rushing game since 1966.

LOGAN -- Ron McBride celebrated like it was his birthday come early last October while watching his former player and assistant Gary Andersen coach Utah State to its first win over BYU in 17 years.

And McBride will celebrate like Santa Claus came in September if his Weber State Wildcats can beat Andersen's Aggies today at 6 p.m. at Romney Stadium.

A week after USU and WSU each came heartbreakingly close to pulling off upsets of historic significance, both programs are looking to rebound and make a statement about where their seasons are headed.

Freshmen help WSU, USU fans cheer up

As both the Aggies and Wildcats lick their wounds from difficult finishes to their season-opening football games, their most positive-minded fans are focused on one bright spot:

The freshmen.

Both Weber State and Utah State had first-year players step up with impressive performances that earned national attention.

WSU wide receiver Xavian Johnson has been named the National Freshman of the Week by The Sports Network and Fathead.com.

WSU notes: Aggies, Wildcats will meet with something to prove

It only makes sense that Weber State and Utah State would meet this weekend in Logan.

After seeing potentially historic wins turn into last-minute losses last Saturday, both teams are suffering from Charlie Brown Syndrome -- knocked flat on their backs once again after believing that just this once, Lucy would not pull the ball away.

The Aggies' near take-down of defending national champion Auburn hurts all the more for knowing they were an onside kick recovery away from beating a ranked opponent on the road for the first time in school history.

Oh so close! Dyer's TD lifts No. 23 AU past Utah State 42-38

AUBURN, Ala. — Chuckie Keeton hardly played like a freshman quarterback and Utah State didn’t back down from the defending national champions.

In fact, the Aggies could rightfully claim to have outplayed No. 23 Auburn.

Unfazed by 87,000-plus fans and a Southeastern Conference power, the Aggies twice raced to double-digit leads before falling 42-38 Saturday after a wild final few minutes.
