Firefighters race to contain Colorado wildfire

CONIFER, Colo. — Residents of about 180 homes who fled a wildfire southwest of Denver earlier this week were waiting Friday to hear when they could return while other families were welcoming the chance to go back to their neighborhood.

26 homes now lost in fast-moving Reno fire

RENO, Nev. -- Firefighters worked to hold the line Friday on a fast-moving brush fire that tore through the Reno area, destroyed 26 houses and forced thousands of residents to flee. The forecast of rain and snow would help douse the flames but also increase the chance of flooding on the charred land, authorities said.

The blaze started shortly after noon Thursday and, fueled by wind gusts reaching 82 mph, mushroomed to more than 6 square miles before firefighters stopped its surge toward Reno.

Nev. Wildfire burns 20 homes; 2,000 evacuated

RENO, Nev. -- Firefighters worked to hold the line Friday on a fast-moving brush fire that tore through the Reno area, destroying at least 20 houses and forcing thousands of residents to flee.

The blaze started shortly after noon Thursday and, fueled by wind gusts reaching 82 mph, mushroomed to more than 6 square miles in size before firefighters stopped its surge toward Reno. The fire is holding steady at about 3,700 acres and was 50 percent contained, spokesman Mark Regan of the Sierra Fire Protection District said Friday.

Detailing costs to fight Rudd Canyon fire

FARMINGTON — Davis County’s portion of the firefighting cost to battle Farmington’s Rudd Canyon wildland fire has yet to be determined.

But because 13.9 acres of the fire occurred on U.S. Forest Service lands, and only one-tenth of an acre of the fire occurred on county land, county officials may breathe a deep sigh of relief.
