Freezing temperatures kill waterfowl in Farmington Bay

FARMINGTON — Overnight temperatures have become so cold at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area that birds are literally freezing in the ice as they huddle to sleep.

“Some of them will freeze right there in ice,” Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area Assistant Manager Jason Jones said of the fowl that typically can survive cold temperatures.

After subduing a bighorn sheep with tranquilizer dart, biologists Jessica Jennings-Gaines, left, and Doug Brimeyer from Wyoming Game and Fish quickly take samples of the animal at the base of Miller Butte in Jackson, Wyo., on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013. Biologists seek cause of deadly sheep pneumonia

JACKSON — A dart loaded with tranquilizer makes a “whap” as it connects with the haunches of an unsuspecting bighorn sheep near the base of Miller Butte.

The sheep, a 3-year-old ewe, gets wobbly within a few minutes. She fades into a sleep and biologists Doug Brimeyer and Jessica Jennings-Gaines approach.

The ewe is drooling as Brimeyer and Jennings-Gaines fit a hood over her eyes and spread her jaws. “Say ‘ahh,’” Brimeyer says as he holds the animal steady.

Jennings-Gaines picks unchewed grass off the ewe’s tongue before taking saliva samples from her tonsils and gums.

OGDEN — Maybe it was attracted to the wildcat logo, or perhaps it was auditioning to be the football team’s new mascot.

The more likely explanation for the presence of a live bobcat at Weber State University’s Stewart Stadium, however, was a cozy shelter and a tasty meal or two.

On Wednesday, campus police spotted the furry feline perched on a rail at the stadium. They brought in a state wildlife official, and after looking around the premises, they found a likely reason for the cat’s presence — a small shed with a floor littered with pigeon feathers.

Suburban deer

Wildlife migrating to people centers

At Foothills Park in Palo Alto, Calif., a mama deer and her family emerged from the woods and grazed in the meadow just beyond a crowded picnic area. They paid no mind to the dozens of onlookers.

In Marin County, on the slopes of Mount Burdell at Olompali State Park, many hikers had similar encounters. A multitude of deer, almost tame, were everywhere.

Yet on the western slopes of the high Sierra, you could go days and never see a deer.

WEST HAVEN — Those who love Utah’s wilderness, and a step back into history to go along with it, may want to explore Weber County’s best-kept secret.

The portion of the Centennial Trail through West Haven and Marriott-Slaterville is a 31⁄2-mile stretch between the two cities. With the recent paving of the final mile, the trail is nearly completed.

The Centennial Trail is a 27-mile trail in Weber County that follows the Ogden and Weber rivers and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail connecting Ogden and Weber canyons.

Nev. bighorn sheep make new home in Utah

The helicopter hovered low, allowing a crew member to shoot a net over a desert bighorn sheep in southeastern Nevada.

A “mugger” jumped from the aircraft and ran over, giving the animal a shot to calm it down before tying its legs with leather strapping, blindfolding it, putting it in a sack and hoisting it into the air with three other sheep.

With that, the animals started their journey to rangeland in Southern Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
