Avalanche kills Canadian man

VICTORIA, B.C. -- A 33-year-old Alberta man has been identified as the victim of an avalanche Friday near Sparwood in southeast British Columbia.

LIBERTY — Three snowmobilers from Montana who became stranded in deep snow Thursday night survived by taking refuge in a cabin in the Monte Cristo area, according to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

SEATTLE — The expert skiers wasted no time after an avalanche hit and swept their friends down a steep slope in Washington state. They immediately turned on their emergency beacons and began searching for signs of life.

Deadly avalanches struck in an instant; 4 killed

STEVENS PASS, Wash. -- Her buddy shouted "Avalanche!" but when things started sliding, it felt to professional skier Elyse Saugstad like just a tiny rush of loose snow beneath her skis.

In an instant the weight and pressure grew so immense that she rocketed down the slope, banging into trees and rolling upside down.

They say 63-year-old rescuer Ray Shriver was killed, and the pilot and another rescuer were taken to a hospital. Sheriff's officials say deputies reached the snowmobilers after tending to the helicopter victims, but 53-year-old Steven Anderson of Morris, Minn., also has died. Rescuer, snowmobiler killed when copter crashes

JACKSON, Wyo. -- Federal authorities on Thursday were investigating the crash of a search-and-rescue helicopter in northwest Wyoming that killed a volunteer crew member who was trying to help an injured snowmobiler who also died.

Snowmobiler dies in avalanche near Fish Lake

RICHFIELD -- Officials say a snowmobiler has died in an avalanche near central Utah's Fish Lake.

Inflatable avalanche vest lands 'Gear of the Show' honor

SALT LAKE CITY -- An inflatable vest meant to keep skiers afloat in an avalanche has taken top honors at a premiere outdoor-gear trade show in Salt Lake City.

Dog found alive 4 days after avalanche

BILLINGS, Mont. -- A dog that was feared dead after he was swept away in a weekend avalanche that killed his owner showed up four days later at the Montana motel where his owners had stayed the night before going backcountry skiing.
