ZAGREB, Croatia — Teenager Mikaela Shiffrin is living up to her billing as American skiing’s next big star. 

She earned her second World Cup title Friday by winning the slalom by a massive 1.19-second margin to regain the lead in the discipline standings.

Vonn returns to Europe, begins training again

Lindsey Vonn is feeling better and has returned to Europe to train. Meanwhile, it’s less likely Bode Miller will race this season.

Vonn started training for a return to the World Cup circuit after a midseason break to recover from an intestinal illness.

U.S. women’s bobsled team a diverse mix

Diversity is the theme of this season’s U.S. women’s bobsled roster.

The nine-person team includes an Olympic sprinting gold medalist, an elite hurdler with more than 300,000 Twitter followers, four other athletes with extensive track and field backgrounds, a personal trainer, a volleyball player and a softball shortstop. They come from California to New Jersey, Georgia to Illinois.

PARK CITY — Katie Uhlaender was a bundle of nerves as she stood in the finish area at Friday’s World Cup skeleton race, waiting for one final challenger to cross the line.

"It was like watching a scary movie and not wanting to really look," said Uhlaender, the reigning world champion.

When she did, she almost couldn’t believe her eyes.

Vonn skips World Cup in Finland; readies for Aspen

STOCKHOLM — Lindsey Vonn will skip the first World Cup slalom of the season in Finland this weekend, choosing instead to prepare for home races in Colorado.

U.S. Ski Team spokesman Doug Haney says Vonn "has had an incredible preparation period" so far, but will focus on the only U.S. stop on the women’s circuit on Nov. 24-25 in Aspen, Colo.

Skier Lindsey Vonn can’t race against men in World Cup

Lindsey Vonn’s request to compete in a men’s World Cup downhill race has been rejected by the International Ski Federation.

The FIS council met Saturday in Oberhofen, Switzerland, and "confirmed that one gender is not entitled to participate in races of the other," adding in a statement that "exceptions will not be made to the FIS Rules."

Austrian skier Bjorn Sieber, 23, dies in car crash

SCHWARZENBERG, Austria — World Cup Alpine skier Bjorn Sieber of Austria died Friday after the van he was riding in swerved off a mountain road and rolled down a hill, police and the Austrian ski federation said.

The 23-year-old Sieber wasn’t on the team for Sunday’s season-opening giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, but was scheduled to be one of the skiers who test the course before a race.

Skier Vonn won’t give up on ambition to race against men

 

Vonn has asked the International Ski Federation, known by its French acronym of FIS, to allow her to compete in the men’s downhill on Nov. 24 in Lake Louise, Alberta.

Top of Utah ski patrollers get prepared for new season

POWDER MOUNTAIN — Ski patrollers wear many hats: Mountaineer, rules enforcer, mountain escort, customer service provider, ski bum, and — perhaps most importantly — medical technician.

The initial process of becoming a ski patroller requires an intensive course in emergency care in preparation for dealing with the various injuries and medical emergencies that occur on the slopes every winter, but it’s not enough to merely take the course at the beginning of one’s patrol career and call it good.
