'Wicked' author takes final trip to land of Oz

Until a couple of months ago, I hadn't read "Wicked." I haven't seen the musical, either, which apparently differs quite a bit from the book.

When I picked up "Wicked," I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't what I got -- and that was a delightful surprise.

Symphony goes over the rainbow

One reason it still enthralls today is the timeless Harold Arlen score. Songs like "Over the Rainbow" and "If I Only Had a Brain" are touchstones of a golden era of film music.

The Utah Symphony plays along with the movie and the Judy Garland vocal tracks, bringing a live element to the show on Thursday in Ogden, and on Nov. 12 and 13 in Salt Lake City.

"It is a classic, and a hot box-office ticket," said David Cho, who is conducting the symphony for the show. "And it is a challenge for me as a conductor, as I have to follow this thing called a clock."
