Local ski resorts close for the season

EDEN — Jason Hardy was one of the last people to ride a ski lift in the Top of Utah this season, having spent Sunday afternoon on the slopes of Powder Mountain.

Wolf Mountain to close March 17

LIBERTY -- Wolf Mountain will close for the season at 9 p.m. March 17, the Ogden Valley ski resort announced Thursday.

Water managers not worrying yet about lack of snow

OGDEN -- A year ago, water managers saw snowpacks 150 percent of normal burying Utah's mountains and were worrying themselves sick about what the spring runoff would be like. This year, there's a lot less to worry about.

Snowbasin stuffed for Thanksgiving

SNOWBASIN -- While many shoppers arose well before the crack of dawn today to take advantage of Black Friday shopping deals, Marshall McGonegal and his friends opted for Black Thursday.

McGonegal, of Eden, was first in line to board the Needles Gondola at Snowbasin as it opened its lifts for the 2011-12 season -- his reward for arriving at the resort around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

It's time to hit the local ski slopes

Looking for a fun way to burn some of those excess Thanksgiving calories? The Ogden area's three ski resorts have got you covered.

Powder Mountain kicked off the 2011-12 ski and snowboard season Tuesday with the opening of its Sundown lift for night skiing. Its two neighbors to the west, Snowbasin and Wolf Mountain, will open portions of their slopes for day use on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

In keeping with tradition, Snowbasin has chosen Thanksgiving Day for its opener. The Little Cat and Needles Gondola lifts will begin running at 9 a.m., with several groomed runs in the beginner-to-intermediate range.

Utah resorts still capitalizing on Olympic success

SALT LAKE CITY -- Before the buildup for the Olympics 10 years ago, Snowbasin in Utah was little more than a mom-and-pop operation, with aging lifts and amenities and offices in a single-wide trailer.

Now even its bathrooms are turning heads, with the Italian marble day lodge restrooms recently voted top five in the U.S.

Plenty has changed since the 2002 Winter Games put Utah's ski industry on the map.

The state's 14 resorts have undergone roughly a billion dollars in improvements, from high-speed lifts and bubble chairs to the construction of high-end global hotels such as the Montage Deer Valley and Waldorf Astoria Park City.
