As women grow older, daughter becomes best friend

Gentlemen, take note: If your wife has stopped calling you as much as she used to and you feel like you're being replaced, you might be right to suspect that there's someone else in her life. But it's not another man -- it's another woman. And she's probably your own daughter.

While men tend to maintain a woman as their closest confidant throughout their adult lives, women's focus shifts from their spouse to their adult daughter as they age, according to an analysis of nearly 2 billion cell phone calls and almost half a billion text messages.

Saudi woman’s election at WSU stirs interest back home

OGDEN — When Zaynab Alshakhiss won her bid for the Weber State University student Senate, it didn’t draw much attention in Ogden, but when the news hit in Alshakhiss’ native Saudi Arabia, the media mobilized.

Over spring break, more than a dozen print and online newspapers approached Weber State representatives and Alshakhiss for the story of her groundbreaking win as the international student senator for the 2012-13 year.

Why aren't more women leading businesses?

Why aren't there more women in local leadership roles?

Nationally, just 16.1 percent of the directors of Fortune 500 companies last year were women, according to a study by Catalyst, a New York City-based nonprofit that advocates for better opportunities for women in business. That statistic is slowly creeping up, but women who were fighting for equal rights and equal representation decades ago thought there would be more gender parity by 2011.

College, where you learn to really think about what you do

Like all teachers on the college level, Adrienne Gillespie is both dismayed by and thrilled with her students. Thrilled because some are wonders: Bright. Aggressive. Able to leap tall concepts with a single mental bound. They know why they need an education. They mean to get one.

These are the students whose papers get graded last. Why? Every professor needs a treat.

She’s dismayed because some students are ticket punchers, people who “just say, ‘Give me my degree. I just need a degree. Why do you want me to take these other classes?’ ”

Single women need to know J.A.C. about dating

LOS ANGELES -- It was on a smoking patio in L.A.'s Echo Park that an older woman named Annie shattered my illusions about finding a suitable boyfriend in my 30s.

"Tell them, 'If you don't have jack, don't call back,'" she said, while I fiddled guiltily with an American Spirit (I had "quit" two weeks earlier). I nodded, thinking I understood.

"J.A.C.," she said again, holding up three fingers. "Job, apartment or car."
