Prep sports: Mountain Crest swims to strong showing

PROVO -- Skyline swam away with the state 4-A swimming titles on Saturday, outpointing the rest of field in impressive fashion at BYU's pool.

After the two-day event, the Skyline girls tallied 458.5 points, followed by Woods Cross 9235) and Olympus (211).

Mountain Crest was fourth, followed by Logan and Sky View, with Box Elder 13th.

Pool heats up as prep elite vie for supremacy

During the next week, swim pools around the state will be echoing with the cheers and tears of Top of Utah high school swimmers as they battle for state qualifications and region titles at a handful of championship meets.

With Viewmont tucked into a Salt Lake region this year, the Region 1 forecast calls for a Weber High surge for both the boys and girls titles. They'll be led by top performers Elizabeth Tomon, Erin Nordhill, Brighton West, Rachel De Young, Mary Williams, and Rachel Wilding for the girls; and Chandler Ward, Tim Romney, Shea Smith, Drake Mendelson, Tim Romney, John Brasher, Josh Nguyen, and Jon Vu for the boys.

Prep girls basketball: Lancers wallop Warriors

LAYTON -- Non-league wins do not get you into the state girls basketball tournament.

After going undefeated during the preseason, the Lancers opened Region 1 play Tuesday against a team they hadn't beaten since a sweep in the 2006-07 season.

Limiting Weber High to a season-low point total, Layton snapped an eight-game skid versus the Warriors with a wire-to-wire 46-27 victory.

Boys basketball: Wildcats rip Royals for road victory

ROY -- Skylar Farnes scored 16 for Woods Cross as the Wildcats nabbed a 72-59 road win at Roy High Thursday night.

Woods Cross went on an 8-0 run in the game's waning minutes picking up their fifth consecutive win while dropping Roy to 5-4.

Five Wildcats logged double digit scoring with Farnes leading the way. Brady Cowley logged 13 points while Filipo Mokofisi, Hayden Grant and Mike Jacobson all contributed 11.

Strong legacy of success in Davis School District

T.C. Christensen, a 1971 graduate of Layton High, recently attended his 40th high school reunion.

Standing in a circle with a group of fellow alumni, one person asked what he had gone on to do after high school. He told them he was a filmmaker.

Prep notes: Warriors, Vikings clean up in the pool

The Warriors and Vikings displayed plenty of team depth at last week's City-County and Davis District swim championships.

In the City-County Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Ben Lomond High, Weber outscored the field for boys and girls title victories.

In the girls team chase, Weber topped Fremont, with Ogden third and Roy fourth.

Prep football: Lakers let chance slip away

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Turnovers crippled the Lakers at Thomas Budge Field on Friday night as the Sky View Bobcats escaped with a 21-17 win dropping Bonneville to 1-4 in Region 5 action.

Bonneville lost the ball five times and Sky View quarterback Nicholas Carver made them pay with 231 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-29 passing.

"You can't turn the ball over five times against anybody," Bonneville coach Randy Johnson said. "It gives them the short field and when you give a team that many opportunities they're going to score."

Prep notes: Soccer title chase is under way

The state girls soccer tournaments jump into action this afternoon, with the top teams angling for an appearance later this month at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Region 1 will send four squads into the state 5-A bracket, with Davis and Fremont earning home games after tying for the league title, and Northridge and Weber facing big road battles this afternoon.

Region 2 champion Viewmont is also one of the top teams in the 5-A ranks. The Vikings reached the title game a year ago before falling to Brighton.

Region 5 champion Bonneville is one of two Top of Utah schools to bear the defending champ label -- St. Joseph is the other -- but the young Lakers appear equal to the task.

Doubles duo wins state, helps Tigers take third

OREM -- Ogden High’s Abbey Anjewierden had so much fun winning the state girls doubles championship a year ago, she went out and did it again.

Anjewierden teamed up with sister Nicole to win the state 4-A championship at No. 1 doubles last season. This season — with Ogden in the 3-A ranks — Anjewierden teamed with Meredith Tribe for the season. Weather pushed the semifinals and finals to Monday at Timpanogos High School.

The Tigers duo topped a Judge Memorial squad in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1, then took on Snow Canyon’s Abbey Hafen and Madi Harrison in the final.

Prep football: Bees' last-gasp score turns Lakers away

BRIGHAM CITY -- It was homecoming for the Box Elder Bees Friday night and while celebrations were happening all over the place, the home team and home crowd saved the best one for last.

Trailing 17-13 with under a minute remaining in the game, Box Elder quarterback Brtton Gunter found a wide open McKay Parrish in the corner of the end zone to cap a thrilling

20-17 come from behind victory over the Bonneville Lakers in the second to last region game for both teams.

Northridge volleyball goes 9-0 at home

LAYTON -- It was a 'Ridge repeat at the Round Table Rumble.

With seniors Allora Tanner and Shannon LaVoye combining for 20 kills, the Knights whipped Woods Cross 25-18, 25-10 in only 39 minutes Saturday to win the eight-team Northridge High volleyball tournament for the second straight year.

The undefeated Knights (10-0 overall), went 9-0 in the two-day Round Table Rumble.

SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Titans forgot their manners Friday night, proving defensive and reactionary in smashing Skyline in a 13-7 slugfest.

While both defenses stole the show for the majority of the night, the Titans had a score in each half to reward their defense.

"We still need to work hard and keep building chemistry," Syracuse coach Russ Jones said. "But I am proud of our whole team's effort tonight."

Prep football: Trio of schools vie for Bountiful-area supremacy

WOODS CROSS -- A pair of teams looking to battle back into the state football playoff scene will square off tonight in the season-opening endowment games.

Viewmont will travel a few miles to Woods Cross, which starts the Nick Longshore era tonight. The Vikings have left the brutal Region 1 for Region 2, which includes West and Hunter. But Brad Lloyd's squad returns 18 starters, including QB Josh Staples.

Prep baseball all-stars gather for tripleheader in Ogden

OGDEN -- Nearly 100 top Utah high school senior baseball players will gather this weekend at Lindquist Field for the Utah All-Star Baseball Games.

The all-stars include 21 Top of Utah performers.

The tripleheader, now in its 67th year, will start at noon with the 3-A game, followed by the 5-A game at about 3:30 p.m., and the 4-A contest at 7 p.m. The teams square off in a North vs. South format.
