LOS ANGELES — The typical human couple spends $27,000 on their wedding day. For Baby Hope Diamond and Chilly Pasternak, the big day cost $158,187.26.

The dogs’ glittering affair — $6,000 wedding dress! $5,000 sushi! $15,000 orchestra! — Thursday night at the Jumeirah Essex House Hotel in New York City won the Guinness World Record for the most expensive pet wedding.

Turkey weighing response to Syria

BEIRUT — Turkey was weighing its response Saturday to the shooting down by Syria of one of its planes, an incident that sent tensions soaring between two neighbors already at odds over the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

The deliberations appeared to be focusing in part on the question of whether the Turkish plane was in Syrian airspace when it was hit, as the Syrian government claims. Two pilots remained missing late Saturday, and the Turkish and Syrian navies had launched a massive rescue operation in the eastern Mediterranean, where the aircraft came down.

New Egyptian president to be announced

CAIRO — Egyptian election officials said Saturday that they will confirm the results of the nation's first democratic presidential election on Sunday, an announcement that will either usher in the Arab world's first Islamist head of state or place at the helm a veteran of deposed leader Hosni Mubarak's secular government.

Officials worry about election tampering in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Mexican democracy has come a long way from the days when the ruling party would give out washing machines for votes and rip up ballots with the wrong box checked off.

Today, electoral regulators preside over an elaborate system of safeguards that have made stealing the presidency at the ballot box impossible, political analysts say. But they warn that the country's July 1 election remains vulnerable to subtler forms of tampering and the shadowy influences of organized crime, along with some new twists on the old dirty tricks.

U.S. serviceman suspected in killing spree in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The clusters of bodies heaped in a rural Kandahar hamlet have given rise to the inevitable question: Are U.S.-Afghan relations now too tainted for the nations to move ahead as allies in this war?

Libya officials: Gadhafi captured, possibly killed

SIRTE, Libya — Libya's information minister said Moammar Gadhafi was killed Thursday when revolutionary forces overwhelmed his hometown, Sirte, the last major bastion of resistance two months after the regime fell. Amid the fighting, a NATO airstrike blasted a fleeing convoy that fighters said was carrying Gadhafi.

The head of Libya's interim government did not immediately confirm Gadhafi's capture or death, and many officials said they were still trying to verify what happened.

Al-Jazeera TV showed footage of a man resembling Gadhafi lying dead or severely wounded, bleeding from the head and stripped to the waist as fighters rolled him over on the pavement.

Miss Universe Pageant 2011

(The Associated Press) This is an undated image obtained from the Twitter page of Anders Behring Breivik, 32, who was arrested Friday in connection with the twin attacks on a youth camp and a government building in Oslo, Norway. Breivik is a suspect in both the shootings and the Oslo explosion Friday.

Norwegian police probe darker side of boyish-looking suspect

VIENNA — In the photographs now circulating around the world, Anders Behring Breivik looks almost preppy. Neatly parted blond hair frames a boyishly handsome face. The upturned collar of a peach-colored polo shirt pokes through a dark Izod sweater.

It’s hard to reconcile the softly smiling young man in these professional studio shots with the monster who witnesses say donned a police uniform and ruthlessly hunted down scores of young Norwegians, even firing at those who jumped into freezing water in a desperate bid to escape his rampage.

“I’ll kill every one of you,” he shouted at victims, witnesses recalled.

Flowers and candles were placed outside the Scandinavian and Nordic Embassies' building in Berlin, Germany, Saturday July 23, 2011. A Norwegian is reported to have set off an explosion in Oslo city centre before going on a shooting spree on nearby teenage vacation destination of Utoya island, killing some 91 people, before being detained by police on Saturday July 22. Investigators are still searching the surrounding waters, where people tried to flee from the attack. (Axel Schmidt/Associated Press)

OSLO, Norway — A gunman who opened fire on an island teeming with young people kept shooting for 1.5 hours before surrendering to a SWAT team, which arrived 40 minutes after they were called, police said Saturday.

Iraq prime minister won't seek thiird term

BAGHDAD -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will not run for a third term in 2014, an adviser said Saturday, limiting himself in the name of democracy while keeping a wary eye on the popular anger at governments across the Middle East. Al-Maliki, a Shiite, narrowly held onto a second four-year term despite falling short in national elections last year. His successor will be the first to lead without U.S.
