Prep notes: Top of Utah basketball teams regroup

As 2012 dawns, the changing of the calendar offers a lot of Top of Utah basketball teams the chance to regroup for the upcoming league seasons.

While Region 11 jumped into league play in December, the rest of the area leagues used the pre-league scheduled to develop their game plan.

This week's action includes a bevy of traditional matchups, formerly region games now relegated to preseason battles for "bragging rights."

Marvez: Marquez lends his expertise to the theater

A critically acclaimed play is tackling racism and the trappings of stardom in pro wrestling.

Pablo Marquez can personally relate on both accounts.

Marquez -- who is choreographing the grappling action for "The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity," a play set to debut next month in Boca Raton, Fla. -- had visions of fame and fortune when he began wrestling almost two decades ago. Marquez worked for two major U.S. companies in the 1990s (WWE and Extreme Championship Wrestling). He then spent extensive time performing in Japan, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Marvez: 'Gold Standard' Shelton Benjamin now shining in Ring of Honor

The Ring of Honor talent roster has more glitter thanks to Shelton Benjamin.

Nicknamed the "Gold Standard" during a decade-long WWE stint, Benjamin is shining with his new employer. MMA Today: Rising Gilbert Melendez aims for the UFC

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is considered one of the best 155-pound fighters in the world. He is 19-2, and has won five consecutive fights. But one glaring hole remains in his impressive resume -- a run atop the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Melendez's opportunity opened earlier this year when Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, purchased Strikeforce. UFC President Dana White spoke about moving Melendez to the higher-profile company, and that likely will happen if Melendez defeats Jorge Masvidal in the main event of Saturday's Strikeforce card in San Diego.

The event will air live (Showtime, 10 p.m. EST, tape-delayed on the West Coast). Melendez, 29, a native of Santa Ana, Calif., acknowledged the recent discussion about his potential entry into the UFC.
