OREM — For Utah wrestling fans, tonight has the feel of a heavyweight title fight card.

For 15 Top of Utah wrestlers, the momentum is building for their marquee moment.

New colleg graduate has thriving wrestling career

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — More than six years after entering West Virginia University, Michael Paris got his advertising degree this month. And for as long as he can, he doesn’t plan to use it. 

Not while he’s traveling the globe for TNA wrestling, which signed him in June 2011 as alter ego Zema Ion, a hair-obsessed Filipino supermodel.

MIDVALE — A postseason basketball tournament featuring the championship from Utah’s different classifications?

Prep wrestling: Syracuse claims top spot at Warrior Duels

PLEASANT VIEW — Several top teams met in the Warrior Duels prep wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, but it was the Titans who topped them all.

Host Weber, Bear River, Alta, Logan and Tooele each had individual champions, but the Syracuse Titans rode their talented lineup to a 7-0 run through the dual match competition at Weber High School.

Wrestlers impress at early invitationals

Top of Utah wrestling squads made impressive splashes at the first weekend of invitationals around the west.

Box Elder won the Layton High Invitational, with host Layton second, Viewmont third and Fremont fourth.

Top of Utah wrestlers size each other up

The top wrestlers in the state have put away the Thanksgiving leftovers, and are now targeting the big invitational portion of the season as teams figure out where they stand.

Based on preseason rankings by the Wrestling USA magazine’s Utah editor, it looks like it could be a banner year for Top of Utah schools.

Police: Pair of Iowa wrestlers hunted rabbits for hats

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two University of Iowa wrestlers were suspended from the team Wednesday after police said they admitted to illegally hunting rabbits in hopes of making rabbit-skin caps.

Police said Alex Meyer and Connor Ryan, both freshmen, were arrested Tuesday night after they inadvertently caused a campus security scare.

Jeff Blatnick, 1984 gold medal wrestler, dies

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Jeff Blatnick, who overcame cancer to win a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1984 Summer Olympics, has died in New York state at age 55.

 

Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y., said Wednesday that he died there of heart failure.

Sanderson's absence opens door for Jake Herbert

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The past had threatened to overshadow the future at this year's U.S. Olympic Team Trials, with gold medal-winning wrestlers from each of the past four games planning comeback attempts.

One of those former champions, Cael Sanderson, won't make it to Iowa City. His absence could help open the door for up-and-comer Jake Herbert to showcase his talents in London this summer.

PSU coach Sanderson to sit out Olympic trials

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson has decided against competing in next week's Olympic Team Trials and will not chase another gold medal.

Sanderson came out of retirement last year, seven years after winning gold at the Athens Olympics.
